I posted a thread before that my computer broke down and my plans to get a new one via financing it from Best Buy with a best buy credit card. Well turns out I didn't get approved because I forgot to renew the deferment on my college loans so that interfered....I am taking care of it but it will take more time than I want to wait.

So instead I just ordered this Acer Aspire E5-573G

It seems way better than the HP I was going to get, so I guess in retrospect I am glad I didn't get the best buy credit card...otherwise I would have already gotten that HP instead of this. I had to borrow a bit of money from my mom, but I will of course make sure and pay her back.

I'm glad you didn't spend money on a HP product.
IMO they seem to break down quite fast and we have a HP printer that is so annoying to use, and it says "low ink" when there should still be plenty of it.
Grrr...

Volkswagen is not the only manufacturer lying about numbers.

Not to stray too far OT, but like VW they got caught and had to pay:

Back on topic, I actually like HP's more recent laptops. They are incredibly easy to upgrade or modify & are well made. Note that says nothing about the company behind them, please. I'm not convinced HP will be the same company a few years from now, or if they'll even be making laptops.

Acer laptops are typically rated middle of the pack, but it's a slightly skewed IMO. Many of the website ratings will actually bias their ratings toward brands that stuff new laptops with junk software & away from those that provide good customer service. Acer, for instance, rates better than ASUS, Lenovo and MSI for support, yet the three often receive higher total ratings. To me that indicates advertising budgets at play. Another area where that happens is design; other brands are described as more "innovative" (read: do strange, uncomfortable things just to stand out in a crowded market). Acer tends to stick to what works good & people find useful.

Overall, I'd still say Sweetleaf made a good choice that she'll be happy with.

My linux laptop mobo is threatening to fritz lately, and I wanted a cheap laptop to get on the internet with. I bought I Toshiba Chromebook 2 - got it for less than $250 US, it has better graphics than I expected, and it's doing a lot more than I expected. I'm even getting a lot out of Google Drive/etc. I'm pleasantly surprised.

I have an 11 year old HP Pavillion ZV5000 that I still use for home theatre/emulators. The only things I've had to replace are the optical drive and the power supply. I bought it new for about £900 and although it's internet-useful days are coming to an end it was quite a high end multimedia machine back in the day:

I still love it and will carry on using it when it's as internet-useful as a 386.

These days I don't have the disposable income for a high end HP (and from what I've seen I'm not missing much) so I bought a used Dell Latitude E6410 yesterday and plan to replace the Windows 7-infested hard drive with a spare SSD I have lying around and Linux Mint:

I am as well I do certainly like the Acer a lot more than any of the HPs I looked at. Of course sucks I had to send it back to get the wi-fi working but aside from that I think it was a good choice.

I thought of getting a chrome book, but I figured it wouldn't be any good for League of Legends...though I know they are supposed to be good for general internet use and very portable.
