My card slot stopped working sometime ago, and I have been relying on my usb ports for connecting to the net, but now they are dying and I am down to 1 our of 4. Does anyone know what will be causing this and if there is anything I can do ? I cannot afford to be without my net... :(

hey graelwyn, tried upgrading drivers for pci card and the other stuff?? also do you have all your updates from laptop manufacterer(hp,dell,sony.etc.) and windows microsoft updates???

also a palce to check for the devices such as pci and usb access is in the BIOS there should be a entry for usb and plugin devices and behavior of the ports, make sure all USB ports are turned on, as well as pci card

another place is to check for updates on hardware drivers by pressing windows key and pause break then going to hardwarethen click on device manager, go to bottom (were it says universal serial bus controllors open the plus sign and since your machine has 4 ports, right click (one at a time) and click update driver the most important one at this time is that pci to usb and the pcmcia adapters(few entries above usb controllors

another one you will want to update is the 1394 bus host controllors,

just im me if still not sure what to do ok grael??

also (im in im with cousin too) he asks, is it a dell white and grey in color? reason he asks is that sometimes dell laptops that are white and grey have that problem and is only fixable by getting a new motherboard

my cousin is a computer repair tech so if any questions im not sure about i can always ask him.

please try the above with the updating drivers

It sounds like your lappie's motherboard is on the way out. Aside from replacing the motherboard, you'll have to start looking for a replacement lappie.

Replacing a laptop motherboard (out of warranty) is often more expensive than simply replacing the whole thing. It's also incredibly time-consuming.

actually sternn, depending on the orginal cost and age of the laptop, it can be cheaper to replace the mobo than the whole laptop. example the power pin in my sisters laptop, it only cost me $25 to repair on a 2 year old laptop than a $500 for a new one

Was it only the pin that needed fixing, or did the mobo require replacement?

I tried to get a motherboard replaced, and Toshiba wanted more than the laptop was worth to order it.

It would seem the usb ports will work with my webcam but for some reason, only one will work with my wireless adaptor. Any answers?

Yes. From the other thread it seems you are using a belkin wireless adapter; these are very tempermental and seem to often have difficulties being recognised by windows. I have one for my pc and get a lot of trouble with it. Sometimes I am forced just to reinstall the driver and try again in desperation. It is probably worth trying to buy a better wireless adapter if possible.

This would make sense, but for the fact it is still working on one of my 4 usb ports, just not the others, tho I shall be buying a replacement as this one has been battered around a lot and am wondering if that is the issue.

It is possible that the USB ports are fine but there is a problem with Windows and the driver making it look like to ports are dyeing.

No, that was my point...the fact that it was recognised in one USB port but not others is what I believe is a peculiar bug with the belkin drivers - I am not 100% sure but I know I have had similar problems with my own belkin adapter. The drivers seem really buggy.

it also can be software conflict with adapter and usb drivers, meaning only one usb prot is dominent for things like adapters and others for smaller stuff like webcams, i had this one problem like that with a dell desktop, it was easily fixed by using another usb hole and using mouse in other and keyboard in the one i tryed first and it worked.

Have you tried cleaning out your USB ports and other dust-prone areas on the laptop.

Cannot afford a new one. I dont know it is death throes since the usb ports work with other things, and only my card reader has totally gone. The rest is functioning.
