I know this seems more musically driven but it is technical so I put it here.
I've been interested in this kind of music for a long while, my favorite band is considered under the genre of gamewave.

Recently I've been considering maybe having a go at making my own.
I don't know a lot about it and I'm not the best at directions, I learn better just dinking around with a program and figuring it out myself and so I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions on some good, simple and easy to use programs that I could start with.

I recommend MilkyTracker, from www.milkytracker.net , the program is very simple, it's basically load samples and play them back at different frequencies. You can even draw small waves into the sample editor, and create chip-like noises (the next version coming soon will have waveform generation and mixing, which I'm looking forward to), and you can tweak instrument envelope settings etc. in the instrument editor.

Give a knock around with ReFX's QuadraSID and get yourself a sequencer that supports VST plugins. (Like FL Studio, or Cubase)

It'll be hard at first, but you'll get the hang of it.

You should also check out Little Sound Dj, a music app for the Gameboy.
