The Story
Microsoft sucks. I used its utility, correctly, to create a recovery drive. However, instead of reformatting the selected partition, the program reformatted the whole drive. I'm certain that pretty much all the data is still there because the recovery was only 10GB. I have a backup and I thought it would be cool to try to restore the partition table. Also, in case a few of my files didn't get backed up.

My Questions
Has anyone used TestDisk? I'm wondering if it's normal for a 2TB hard drive to take days for the deep search process.

Has anyone used other partition software they like, either in Windows, Mac, or compatible with the Bash shell accessible from the Mac terminal?

Over the years I've used a number of unformatting tools & it seems capacity will forever outpace increases in drive speed. Which means...it could easily take days, possibly a week.

EaseUS, TestDrive...others...I've found they all essentially do the same thing, scanning & rescanning each individual bit, rebuilding possible file tables as they go. And all take about as long, too. Recova and Wise are my favorites.

I would not expect a fully functioning system once you are done; typically what you end up with are nearly all of your files recovered but not necessarily a working OS. Think of what you get as being more like a bucket of pages instead of a book. The data is there but you can't read it end to end. You'll still need to reformat, put on an OS and then figure out how you need to use the files you recovered and (hopefully) stored off elsewhere.

OK thanks, at least now I know I'm dealing with normal behavior from the program. The drive didn't have an OS, but it did have 3 partitions, one of which was an XFAT data partition I'm hoping I can get back intact. The others were backups that I wouldn't trust now anyway: a time machine partition and a partition with some system images of the Windows OS. I won't be surprised though if I end up having to reformat to make the drive usable as my Time Machine backup again.
