Is there any way this can be done? I'd be willing to jailbreak my phone if it means I can play Pokemon Go. :D

Chances are, even if you can it probably won't run very well. iOS updates are infamous for rendering older iDevices nearly unusable.

Buy an Android and never buy from Apple again,

Apple sucks, I have an ipod and it does the job but is a piece of crap in every other regard. It hangs up, the music player is bugged, it crashes and the battery display is sooooo inaccurate.

But no, I don't think you can update to answer your question. My ipod will hang if it tries to update lol

That's part of the reason I avoid Apple products; they're expensive and pretty much made to be disposable.

The phone I currently have, a Samsung Galaxy S3, cost me only $150 Canadian, AND I am able to run Android Marshmallow on it, with decent performance to boot. This is a model that's been around since 2012, which is ancient in the world of smartphones. Not only that, but it's extremely durable compared to an iPhone, and I can even disassemble it with a standard jeweller's phillips head screwdriver if need be. I've dropped it numerous times, and while the case is dinged up with the back cover having seen better days, it's still perfectly functional with the screen having nary a crack.

But anyway, while my phone isn't the flashiest or the most feature packed, it is an incredibly functional device that I will likely use until it's completely dead. If I ever get around to buying an extended life battery for it, this is something that will most definitely be assured.

That's what matters for me! I don't care if something doesn't have all of the latest and greatest features. If it's built to last, I want it. Up until last year, I was using the same Motorola flip phone that I've been using since 2007, and it served its purpose well. It had been dropped many times, but kept on working. I still carry around an Asus Eee PC to school, which my dad bought for $99 back in 2008. The next laptop I'll buy will be a Thinkpad.

Back to the original topic: While it is possible to install iOS 8 on an iPhone 4 with a serious amount of hacking, I don't think it would be the best thing. It will probably run much slower than previous versions of iOS, wear down your battery quicker, and is not officially supported on that device. If your only purpose is to play Pokemon Go, then go with a much cheaper Android device.

Apparently I can get a cheap Android for about $60 (new), which is a fraction of what I would have to pay for an iPhone 5. Criminy, how does Apple get away with this?

Really good marketing, that's how. You can sell an inferior product or service and customers will just eat it up you if you just up your marketing game.
