I am running Windows 7 on an HP Pavilion Slimline with Pentium Dual Core CPU E6800 @ 3.33GHz. It's a 64 bit with 575 GB free of 920 total on the C drive, and 1.35 GB free of 11GB total on the D drive which is set up as the HP recover drive.

The Windows 10 freebie upgrade ends in about 2 weeks. I am wondering if I should get it. My father upgraded from Win 7 to Win 10 already, and he doesn't like it. I have heard both good and bad things about it. I have also been able to avoid installing it by "accident" due to being warned in time about the sneaky tricks Microsoft has been using to force people to install it. I did some research and found that it is hard to undo the installation, and return to Win 7 because your Win 7 will have lost stuff during the upgrade to Win 10. Because of this I will only install Win 10 if I do it in a partition, so I can keep Windows 7, too. That leads to some questions.

1. First, it looks like my D drive partition, which is set up for recovery, should be made bigger. If so, how big?

2. How big a partition should I have for Win 10?

3. I also have a version of Linux on a disk from a relative, and have been thinking of setting that up in a partition, too. I've used Linux before, so that's not a problem, but I would like to know how big the partition should be for that, as well?

4. I am also thinking of making a separate partition for data files, and want to know how big a partition I should have for that. This is a personal, home use PC. The data I use it for consists mostly of personal paperwork, lots of pretty or funny pictures, a little music, and some videos put on by a relative. I will be deleting some of the videos. There are only a few games on the computer, that came with the system, as well as access to Wild Tangent Games, which also came with the computer. I don't use the Wild Tangent games much, and the other games are the usual card games, Majong, and a minefield knockoff, so basically the games don't use up much data memory at all.

5. Will all these new things take up too much of the computer's memory? If so, I can leave off the Linux OS until my computer gets an upgrade in memory, or I get a new machine, neither of which will happen soon.

I would appreciate some feedback from the computer geeks here, as I am not one. I can do some stuff okay, and will follow the computer's instructions for creating and sizing partitions, but it would help to know how big they should be.

In your position I'd stick with Windows 7. I really dislike Windows 10, not just the messy and cumbersome user interface but all the embedded spyware that comes with it. Granted you can turn some of it off, but I just don't like the principle that Microsoft want to slurp everything you do on YOUR computer. The forced automatic updates can be inconvenient too, gobbling bandwidth whenever it wants to, irrespective of whatever else you are doing at the time. I do have a Windows 10 laptop but it is hardly ever used (maybe an hour or two every month) and that is just for updating my SatNav. I use Linux Mint on a daily basis for everything else. There is also suspicion that the "free" update will eventually shift to a subscription only model, it is already going that way with the games that used to be free. Sooner or later you will likely find various features being declared "premium" and requiring payment. They are pushing their cloud services hard and have now reduced the amount of space available for free. Want more, pay. Microsoft is also experimenting with showing advertising directly on your computer. I just don't like where Microsoft are going, so I'm pretty much done with Windows now.

Thanks for the feedback, Lantylam. My other option was to keep to Win 7 until that's no longer any good, and then switch back to Linux. With all the nasty stuff Microsoft is up to, that option looks pretty good. Besides, I'm used to Win 7, and don't really want to take the time to get up to speed on Win 10. Also, I don't need the new browser that comes with it. I use Firefox as my main browser, and occasionally use SeaMonkey, too. I also have Chrome, Win IE, and Comodo Dragon Browsers on my PC, but never use them, except my system does update using Win IE. I've tinkered with Chrome, but didn't like it, and Comodo Dragon is part of a group of programs I got when I downloaded Comodo security software. I use the security stuff, but don't really need the browser. I am fine with Firefox, and that will run with Linux, too. I had it running with my old Linux machine, that became too old for my needs.

With all the spying, the malware, and all the ads, I think sticking to Win 7 will be less stressful for me. :D

Windows 10 is horrible, and there's nothing wrong with Windows 7 (a memory of how great Microsoft was back then) apart from the fact that the Aero theme hasn't aged well. :) It's much more stable than, much more fast than, and has far less compatibility issues than Windows 10.

After feeling willing at first, back when it was first offered for free, I've now decided I'm not going to download it. I've been getting the prompts and reminders that the free offer is ending soon, and I'm going to let it go by after all. I can't stand yet another learning curve in my life. I'm burned out on change.

I heard about that too; on another website someone said it happened to them during an automatic update of general Windows stuff. The advice was given to turn off automatic updates and just manually select crucial ones when the prompts for those came up. I've been doing that and so far nothing's forced itself, though I wouldn't put it past Windows to try.

That's debatable. Aside from being a nightmare to install fresh, I've had absolutely no compatibility or stability issues and I use a good variety of software. As for "fast" windows has never been "fast" at least not without getting your hands dirty in the registry and services. Granted it may have been easier for me since all my hardware aside from the video and sound card are less than 6 months old, but I have yet to run into a single issue aside from MS doubling down on their bloat dogma.

File browsing in windows 8.x was instant; you opened a folder and immediately saw all the files. With Windows 10, it's a different story. Windows 7 might put a drain on your batterly life with the Aero theme, but this was also (almost) as fast.

I have a legitimate copy of Windows 10. Everything Vista was criticized for, Windows 10 for some reason get's of easily with. Apart from the fact that the start menu in 8.x wasn't that good (this is what happens when somebody tries to "force" something new that nobody asked for upon the customers), there really were no issues with it.

I'm running Windows XP x64 Edition on a modern (2011) laptop, and it's blazing fast! I did try Windows 10, but it doesn't have anything that would make me want to upgrade. My newest desktop runs Windows 10, though.

Could I ask what you'd recommend someone do as of the end of support for Windows 7 that Microsoft says is coming in four more years (2020)?

Unless they want to go to Windows 8 for a few months before that also loses support, the only other game in town will be Windows 10.

That is the whole point,.....forced to use Win10 (the info collecting vacuum).

or switch to a Linux distro :D
