Can I understand basic electronics?

I'm trying to understand basic electronics for a new hobby, but what I read on electronics-tutorials.ws is too abstract and advanced at the point I'm at right now. I got interested because my dad is also interested in electronics. I wish I was able to understand such complex topics.
