Please forgive me as I am somewhat ignorant about this stuff and may be talking utter nonsense. I want to switch my harddrive to a solid state drive so I can boot Windows from. The problem is that I don't want to reinstall a bunch of programs.
Is it possible to use a backup or snapshot of the old drive so I don't have to do all that stuff or do I just have to check my schedule and find a free day to install a bunch of things?

Just clone the drive. If the source drive has =/- data on it than the destination drive can accomodate, you can just clone it. Acronis works. There are alternatives out there. Some SSD's such as the SP550 come with Acronis included for free.
I've migrated two Win 7 computers with no issues using Samsung SSDs and the included data migration utility. I did find that over time the 120 GB drive wasn't big enough, so I just got a bigger SSD.
