I've got a new laptop(Vista) and want to use my other laptop(XP) for internet and put Linux(Ubuntu) on it.
The hard disk is full with 15Gb, even if I have thrown away all my documents and have uninstalled almost all the programs.
So it is really necessary to format the hard disk, but there is a little problem, namely that the intern CD-writer does not function.
I read somewhere that someone started Linux from an USB-stick (and I noticed that Ubuntu largely fits on a stick) but would this be possible with a formatted disk?

Or is there another solution? I'm not an computer expert, but not completely empty either.
good links to interesting information is very welcome too!

Hi Lemon,

While waiting for a more knowledgeable person to post a reply, I will simply note that "Damn Small Linux" can be booted from a USB-pen; see http://www.damnsmalllinux.org/

(I plan to switch over to Linux when I purchase a new computer this autumn, but I have not started using Linux yet.)

You can make more space on your hard drive by deleting the system restore files, deleting the temporary internet files and compressing the drive. To get a really good clearout install Spybot and run the secure shredder tool (there are templates which add a large number of unnecessary files to delete).

If you have not done this for a while you should be able to save at least 1 gb.
