Elon Musk is working on brain chips. They are called Neuralinks. One example of the goals of this type of program is to restore limb control to individuals who suffered spinal cord injuries and as a result have lost their ability to walk or move their arms. According to the National Spinal Cord Injury Association, as many as 450,000 people in the United States are living with a spinal cord injury.

It seems like then science fiction of the future may be just around the corner.

One step closer to thought policing.

Eh, there's a world of difference between sensing electrical impulses in certain areas of the brain (such as for walking), and actually reading thoughts.

No, because the microchip is the mark of the beast.

I would love to have neuralink type device in my head! Very cyberpunk idea. :)

According to New Scientist, many researchers reacted to the demo with a grand "So what? We've been doing what Musk just did and much more for years now. We just don't get the press he does."

My main worry would be security. No matter what level of security they're promising, there's always a chance of hackers targeting a newly discovered weakness. And we don't know what that could do to a brain connected to the device yet.

(did you remember to change the factory preset password on your Brainjack 2000?)

It is a baby step towards the future of medicine. However to get it to work properly, the computer chip must be made of carbon, not silicon as shown in the video clip. The body senses silicon as a foreign material, which leads to eventual auto immunity issues. Carbon is not an foreign material, so there is less risk for rejection by the body. Any allotrope of carbon can be used, but graphene is the gold standard so far.

Currently, pure carbon chips are only as powerful as a late 1990s silicon chip. It will take about five to ten years of research and development before they can actively be used this way in the body. I actively study the scientific literature on this subject as it has it’s uses.

There is primitive thought reading already.

Brain computer interfaces may sound futuristic, but adoption of such systems -- which allow signals from the brain to be recorded or used to control technology -- is on the rise. Much of the development work going on around BCIs is focused on medical uses for the tech, but consumer applications of BCIs are already being explored, from providing a better gaming experience to allow your boss to track your work rate. https://www.zdnet.com/article/the-weird ... are-bored/

So a few years down the line..."would you like to be chipped?"

Is that a rhetorical question or what?
