what is up with the spoiler tag

I tried it (the BBCode spoiler tag) on another post and could NOT get it to work at all.
Which is kind of lame to post a spoiler, go to the trouble of marking it as a spoiler and then having it be RIGHT OUT THERE.

The tag can be implemented different ways on different sites too. I've seen spoil and spoiler both used and I'm pretty sure I've seen s which would mean another tag had to be used for strike-thru text.
