Interesting. The black pigment seems to protect them from radiation.
Kind of like the storied moths. How the black moths replaced the white spotted moths in 19th century England during the Industrial Revolution because the trees lost lichen covering and gained black soot covering. So natural selection favored the new coloration as camo against being eaten by birds.
