Maybe it'd be best asking this in the "Getting to know each other" forum but thought I'd try here first. Maybe if there are enough answers the thread could be moved.
Though I'm just curious how many people here use Jabber. But for those who don't know what it is, Jabber is an awesome instant messaging network. It differs from the others (ICQ, MSN, AIM, etc) in that it is built on an open protocol and doesn't rely on anyone central server, instead there are hundreds of servers world-wide that you can choose from. It works much like email in that your Jabber ID (JID) consists of user@server.
There are lots of clients to choose from, my favourite is Psi:

(it runs on Linux, Windows and Mac OS X).
Though you can also use GAIM, Adium, Miranda, Trillian Pro, etc. Oh and another nice little client for windows (http://www.pandion.be/). Even iChat in Mac OS X can connect to Jabber now.
You will also need to find a server, I recommend one near where you live:
