I used to have problems with it on an older OS. I got around it by just dropping the file on to the reader icon. That was the only way to guarantee it would read the material.

The problem I find with Adobe Reader is that all the text files on the internet seem to be for a version I don't have yet and when I get that version they are now for the version after that. Whatever you do don't try downloading the Unicode manual. It takes forever. 1, It's too large. 2, Half way through downloading it a new version comes out and funks up your computer so you have to get a new version of Adobe Reader and then it all happens again! They must update every few days.

Acrobat's kind of a neat technology, but the reader is horrible. If you can avoid using it, use 'Preview' on Mac OS X to view them -- it's much, much faster and less of a struggle.

The problem with Adobe Acrobat is that it comes loaded with an enormous number of plugins for various obscure features. If you use one of many free utilitys (none which I can remember the name of) to disable the plugins you don't need, Acrobat becomes much faster and much more reliable.

Use Reader 5.0, instead of the newer versions. It has fewer plug-ins, so it'll load faster. The Adobe website has a page where you can download older versions of the program.
