Consider a 8600GT,its cheap, overclocks well, can run on most POS power supplys and supports Dx 10:

http://vr-zone.com/index.php?i=4925 its a insane OCer

I'm gonna get either a MSI or eVGA 8600GT and OC it like hell.

Make sure you have a PCI-E x16 slot (though a x8 slot should work as well)

I just got one of these like 2 days ago! i'm on the PC with it now! excellent card, runs vista (or if you use linux, beryl) great! It was only $114 at newegg. Most HP's have 300w power supplys, so if you have a fairly modern HP this will probably work in your system.

EDIT: I have an EVGA, just in case you wanted to know.
EDIT2: Look at the graphics section, 5.9 is pretty good, this system's older card used to get a 2.7. Gaming is 5.5 which is also great.

I was expecting the threadstarter to say "Buy a PS3!"

I know that's what I'm gonna do within a year or two. Does all the things you need a computer to do, it can function as a TiVO, it fuctions as a Blu-Ray player, and it also plays PS3 games. All for $500!

Is it that much better than the 7600GT if you don't intend to play DX10 games?

Its close to the performance of the 7800GT,but if you already have 7600GT, wouldn't recommend going from a 7600GT to a 8600GT,unless you're a hardcore oblivion player.

My POS computer only supports AGP4x, and has a crap 200w power supply. I need a graphics upgrade. I'm considering getting a VERY cheap GeForce 6200 card, to replace my shaderless geForce 4 MX420 crapics. I'm not a hardcore gamer, but I just want shader model 3 support (I have no intention of upgrading to Vista yet).

I purchased an 8600GT a few weeks ago and have been very happy with its performance particularly in consideration of its low price. The one I got (from Gigabyte) even came with a free game, Supreme Commander. Didn't really enjoy the game at all but I'll never be ungrateful for anything free.

I have heard that the 7600 is a slightly better performer than the 8600, so I wouldn't consider upgrading KingMichael. If you really want to play DX10 based games, then you'd probably be better off waiting till the next series of cards as I've heard the 8-series DX10 performance is vastly inferior to its DX9 performance.

I also have read a bit about overclocking and though it seems interesting, I really don't want to do anything that could damage the hardware.

1. The 7600GT is slightly behind the 8600GT,read from a source like Anandtech,Xbitlabs,Guru3D,etc NOT Legionhardware,FiringSquad,HardOCP,etc

2. Company of Heroes ISN'T a true Dx 10 game,it was patched to support Dx 10,and Lost Planet and Call of Juarez are poorly optimized console ports,Bioshock,Crysis,World in Conflict, etc are TRUE Dx 10 games.

neurodeviant, don't EVEN get near a 6200,even if you're a casual gamer, you're MUCH better off getting a new PC,something like a X2 3600,1GB RAM and 8600GT would be nice for you.
