Swapping keyboards
I bought a Win 11 laptop which has an AZERTY keyboard, but it functions like a QUERTY. I looked through the tools to find out how to swap it, but could find nothing. Checking on the web, I found how it's usually done but it doesn't work on my machine. I then bought a keyboard and mouse package, also AZERTY, but, guess what? Yep, that acts like a QUERTY too! Any suggestions on how to fix this?
To get your AZERTY keyboard functioning properly on your Windows 11 laptop,
you will need to adjust the language and keyboard settings to ensure the
system interprets input as AZERTY rather than QWERTY. Here is a step-by-step
guide to help you switch the layout:
1. Access Language and Keyboard Settings
- Go to Settings by pressing Win + I.
- Click on Time & Language on the left sidebar.
- Select Language & region.
2. Add or Adjust the Keyboard Layout
- Under Preferred languages, locate your primary language (e.g.,
English or French, depending on your preference).
- Click on it, then select Options.
- Under Keyboards, you should see a list of installed keyboard
layouts. If AZERTY is not listed, you will need to add it:
- Click Add a keyboard and look for French (France) or
French (Belgium), depending on the AZERTY variant you have.
- Select French as it typically uses an AZERTY layout.
3. Remove QWERTY Layout (If Necessary)
- If there is a QWERTY layout already active, you may need to
remove it to avoid any accidental switching.
- Go back to Preferred languages > Options for your language.
- Under Keyboards, select the QWERTY layout and click Remove.
4. Test and Confirm Layout
- Open a text editor and test typing to make sure it now follows
the AZERTY layout.
- If it is still behaving as QWERTY, try restarting your laptop
to ensure the new settings are fully applied.
5. Quickly Switch Layouts (if you are using multiple languages)
- If you occasionally need to use different keyboard layouts,
you can press Win + Space to quickly toggle between them.
If this still does not work, there may be a third-party software
or driver-related issue. Following these steps should resolve most
layout issues on Windows 11. Let me know if it still acts up, and
we can look at more in-depth troubleshooting!

Thanks Fenn, but I'm pretty sure there wasn't an "add keyboard" option (but I'll have another look). It may be due to hacking, as I've been subjected to a lot of that recently, though I wonder that anyone capable of denying me access to the web (be any of various means; it's a new adventure every time I try to surf!) would be so childish and petty. It's not even a major inconvenience, as I can type equally well with both; I'm bothered more by the fact that today's entertainment involves swithching the language to french, every time I go to another post...
Google. Try stuff. Repeat.
Be persistent and use your head.
The basics are this: keyboards generate a number on key down and on key up.
These key down and key up signals (also called events) have to be interpreted correctly by the computer: there is a mapping from the “key was pressed” number to the “letter was entered” number. Keyboard also have keys that are not letters or numbers or symbols, like page down, print screen, shift, control, volume control. Each key number has to be mapped to a specific behavior. Usually this doesn’t happen very often. Like once when you buy the machine or the keyboard. Consequently it is usually in some obscure configuration screen or file or register key somewhere. Not much talked about, not much used. But it is there somewhere.

Also, I am curious: is this your computer or is it managed by your employer (school, etc)

Interesting stuff, but I wonder if they have overlooked the importance of the various stimuli that humans enjoy? They seem to have concluded that the human brain is something other than hard wired, but if such a brain was woken up at exactly the same time as it was yesterday, and subject to the same degree of indegestion, desire for coffee, flatulance etc. and discovered that the newspaper was exactly the same as yesterdays, along with every other variable we might experience? Can we be sure it woudn't respond mentally in exactly the same way, arriving at the same conclusions, and making the exact same decisions? Maybe they just need to up the complexity of what the circuit boards are subject to for them to be capable of artificial intelligence? Who'd like to make a list of just how many things can happen that will change how a human brain would respond?
