any mp3's should work. try downloading any of my max creek mp3's - they're definitely generic. and many of the shows are available as 64kbps for small files. http://scoogy.com

It doesn't have to be napster. There are plenty of free file sharing programs out there. WinMx is my favourite.

Just a word of advice: be careful when installing a file sharing program. Many of them come bundled with spyware. Kazza is bad for that. WinMx is pretty good though, no spyware, and fairly easy to learn how to use. :)

Downloading is what MP3 players were made for. Did you get any software with it? Did you get a cable to connect to the PC? What type is it?

Oh and for music online, someone I know  swears by eMule/eDonkey/aMule/xMule ... just google any of those. And then of course there's the torrent.

If you have some cd's you can rip them to mp3 to put on the player. A line in plug it has male to male plugs and a walkman you can with a recorder program make your mp3 files from radio or other things that have the 3.5mm plug . One program that can be fun is ipodder you can find ppl audio blogs sports geek news etc and get files ppl want to share and can :-)

i like limewire on pc and mac. there's a free version and a paid one that's faster w/better search and more sources, but even the free one's good. the pro version's worth the 18 bucks if you have it to spare. no spyware on either.

Can't download music on campus. The IT people threw a packet shaper on the network to prioritize network traffic, and they blocked and now monitor ports used by programs like winMX and kazaa.

In addition, the IT department on campus is "openly cooperating with RIAA officals" and will "turn over the personal information of anyone swapping music" to the RIAA.

This all stems from an event last fall when the RIAA went after the campus and a user who was using network bandwidth to swap a huge amount of music.

And now that the prez has signed a bill into law that calls for prison for people who swap even once, I don't care to be the first to be made an example out of so I no longer do it.

Be careful all of you who do though.

Depends what you are looking for as to which the best P2p is Coffee - eD2k (eMule is a great windows client for this) is slow but excellent for harder to get stuff. KazaaLite is a great hack of Kazaa - no spyware and more functionality including IP blocking. And don't forget BitTorrent ;)

Dunc (who is glad he doesn't live in the US - damn RIAA)

Hi,

There are many programs to rip your own cd´s to mp3.
I use a program "Freerip" I downloaded, but I think it contained spyware. I removed that with Ad-Aware.
This program tries to find information about the song tracks on http://www.freedb.org, so you don´t have to type the song-tracks yourself.
I´m sure you can find more programs like that.
If you rip files, you should do this with at least 128 kbps. I´m using 192 kbps to be sure of a reasonable quality.

Also be careful what you download, they seem to have done a crackdown on people getting music for free, as it is illegal, but like many of these things it's one of those laws that can't be enforced. But you might risk being disliked by the actual artists, and that's not something many of us would want, or at least suffer the guilt of 'stealing' from someone you may have respected...

Technically over here, it's illegal to tape shows of the TV (but there are legal ways to use a VCR which is why the machines aren't banned) but everyone does it anyway because it's too hard and wouldn't be worth it to enforce. I tape music videos every week because of that...

If the site says "legal MP3s" then it should be OK because they have the artists permission, as is the case if it's on the official artists website. Otherwise it's the website's fault.

Not that I care that you download whatever you want, just giving something to consider.

Just in case they find a way to enforce music downloading laws, I separate my legal and illegal songs. I have "Own" and "Don't Own" folders.

I still don't take a chance, downloading it illegally. I'll make a poll on this...
