I've been into computers since the late 80s. But I didn't own my own one until 1992.

What about you?

About the same, only I did not get my own computer until the end of 1994.

I remember going to a neighbors house on a hot summer day and while all the children were outside playing, I was busy trying to get the Commedore 64 to work the way I wanted.

I also remember writing my own basic program in HS on one of the never used IBMs.

I have been using computers since the mid '80s but never really got into using them as anything other than a gaming platform until I was much older. I had a C64 back then (well, I've still got it :D) and after a couple of computerless years I bought my first PC in 1997. It rekindled my interest and I did several computing courses on my degree, but didn't have the confidence to pursue it as a career. Only recently have I started getting back into it again and learning new stuff, its my current perseveration, particularly configuring websites and finding my way around Linux. 8)

I taught myself to program in 1980 on my high-school's Commodore PET. Later that year I started visiting Radio Shack and programming the TRS-80 on display. In 1982 I bough a CoCo and taught myself MC6809 assembly language. That year I also bought a 300 baud modem to dial into the university VAX and taught myself C on Unix. I bought an Atari 1040ST in '87 and a used IBM XT clone in '88 or '89. I got a newer PC in 1994 and have been upgrading ever since.

Well I'm only 16 so I haven't been using computers quite as long as you all. I think my family first got a computer in 1998 (but I had USED them before, but they were mostly Macs at school). So I have been using them for almost a decade now.

The first computer I ever got to use was a Texas Instrument TI-99/4 in 1985 when I was in kindergarden.

My brother's 48K Spectrum about 22 years ago I reckon would've been my first exposure - I was only ever interested in playing games on computers though..... God knows how I ended up doing them professionally....

I didn't grow up with computers and was a luddite until 1998. My first PC was a Celeron 300 powered Compaq.

That machine did not provide adequate gaming performance and the proprietary motherboard didn’t allow for much upgrading. I built my first box in 1999 and all the rest since. My first home built machine was Intel based, but since then I’ve been strictly AMD.

My current rig needs to be scrapped. It’s been a couple years without upgrading anything but the hard drives.

Since the early '80s... when I was a toddler.

No, really. Here's a (badly photocopied) picture of me typing on an old Commodore VIC-20 at age 2. http://zone38.net/photos/misc/vic_20.jpg

I'm only 16...I got my first computer in 1996-97 (not sure). I have no idea what it was, just that it crashed a lot and I rarely used it. I now have a Compaq Presarion from '99. It's y2k compatible  (no really, the sticker says so). When a few friends came over, they found that funny, as do I. Anyone know how much a stick of RAM costs? I need to upgrade. :!:

I have using my current Wallstreet
for 1 year. So far, since I really
work my computers hard, I have burnt
out it's 4gig H.D and replaced it
with a 10gig(and quite happy one).
Later burnt out it's CD-Rom and had
a spare just in case. The sound
card was shot, so I bought a parts
Wallstreet for it's spare CD and
sound card. I bought a ram upgrade
for "Ram Disking" and have owned
it's replacement for 6months, so
when this one takes it's final plunge,
I have it replaced.

My next one will be a Pismo(used)
and hopefully I don't toast that one
as badly.

From,
Ghosthunter

MS-dos win 3.11, since I was three. I'm sixteen now and have a 286 with original software in my room, three sealed MS-dos 6.11 upgrade boxes...heh.

Yeah, since before I could remember I knew how to mess around in DOS.

I used my first computers in Jr.High.
The class was typing and they had Apple II's
with that cool green tinted "Wargames"
movie type screen that Mathew Broderick
used to talk to the other computer.

I later got in to apples like 1989's
IIci, SE, SE30's, and Classics. by 1997
I was using a 5300cs that cost me $700
then.

Between 1997-2002 I mostly used 1400's
and 3400's. Between 2002-2005 I have
progressed to the Wallstreet and later
it will be the G3PB-Pismo w/2x DVD
module, FW & USB built-in.

Sincerely,
Ghosthunter
