How do you create an avatar with a clear background so that the color of the avatar background is the same as the forum background?

Image<--clear background.......white background-->Image

Also, I'm using Microsoft paint to make my avatar picture, is there a better program to use?

(I don't know if this topic should go under Computers or WP.net Discussion)

To be brutally honest, almost any other program would be better to use. In order to create that sort of image, you need a program that will let you do so.

Find a program that can edit transparent .gif and/or .png files. Use Google and wikipedia to find a free one that looks good. I only know about the GIMP, which is free and has plenty of features, but probably isn't a good idea if you've only used MS Paint before. It's quite complex compared to Paint.

Also, not every file format supports transparency. JPG and BMP image files don't support it. PNG files allow alpha channel transparency, where pixels can be partially see-through. GIF images handle transparency by forcing every pixel to be transparent or not, but are more widely supported. For example, partially transparent PNG files can be displayed incorrectly in Microsoft Internet Explorer versions 6 and below, but GIF files work with everything.
