I have one of those phones with the built in answering machine.

I'm guessing it has an IC for the computer voice and the ability for me to record my outgoing message.

Does anyone know what might be inside my phone and how I might be able to hack into it and put a better quality digital audio file on it?

It's either that, or I solder in a 1/8 jack and run a digital recording of my voice into it.
The digital voice on the machine is driving me CRAZY and the built-in mic is crap... plus the recording of my voice is so degraded that it sucks worse than the digital voice.

I miss my tape answering machine! :(

Buying one of the old cast off answering machines is a good idea... if our local thrift stores had any decent ones to buy.
I've tried that.

Alex, yeah I'm thinking that might be my best method of getting a better recording.

My real problem is that I just want to tear into the thing to see what's inside
I've already taken it apart so I could add a longer cord between the base and handset... the handset did not have a plug for the cord...it was hardwired in.

Whenever I get to reading a mag like NUTS & VOLTS, and see all the cool stuff someone with REAL knowledge of all things electrical can do... I want to do it to. The idea that there's some integrated circuit that handles the digital voice recording/playback came from reading one of those mags.
Seems like there's got to be a way to reprogram the voice since they did it originally.

I just like to tinker... and hopefully not break anything in the process.

WSMAC, you need to go back to school somehow for this field you are interested in....you have the ability to "think outside the box" and I think with the right piece of paper to back up the knowledge you already have---well, as far as this sort of thing goes....the world could definitely be your oyster!

It's a flash chip. I doubt you'd be able to put your own data on it. You have to interface, and then you need to know the format.

Thanks Wabbits.
I'm actually going to school to learn the computer world and hopefully come out with a piece of paper and the knowledge to back it up so I can get a better career going.

Themapples.... yeah, but isn't that what hacking is all about?
Still, it might not be worth it... but, if I could obtain my own flash chip that I could program... hmmmm
