silence detection software

Hi, I'm new here. I have a quick question. I'm sure most of you are familiar with recording software, like Audacity, which works great. However, I'm looking for recording software (or even plug-ins to other programs) that offers silence detection (i.e., pauses recording when there is no sound). The programs I've seen on the Internet are really expensive. Do any of you know any free software with this capability?

Thanks for the suggestion, but what I'm trying to do is hook up a radio scanner to my computer and have it record all day, while taking out the silence. If I were to encode it, wouldn't I first have to save a huge file with, like, 8 hours of silence? That could take a long time with Audacity.

I know I could hook up a cassette recorder with silence detection and then send the cassette to my computer, but I don't have the equipment (the cassette recorder). Any ideas?

I think theres a website like the laughing policemen that has something like that.
