is this possible? I don't have internet, and the Steam system needs to connect before it will allow me to play. So I can't play Halflife 2 despite paying $70 for it!

I know it would be difficult. I did a quick google and found these results possibly helpful:

http://www.halflife2.net/forums/archive ... 46591.html

http://72.14.205.104/search?q=cache:bQh ... cd=9&gl=us

Since the latter one is a cached result, here is a tidbit:

"The games are programmed in such a way that you need to have an internet connection in order to play them. ... Granted there are Key-Gen programs out there, but if someone buys the game that matches the CD-Key you generate, all the person has to do is tell Valve about it and they'll switch the key from your account to theirs."

Essentially. You can illegally modify it to play it without an internet connection...

But I think that's it. sh***y, isn't it?

I know I had to install HL2 using a 56K line, and it took a few hours. It seems like it decrypts the install files over the internet, so I can't see it working without a connection,
Sucks, I know.

There is no steam-free version of Half-Life 2.

Sorry, but I do not believe there is a way to play HL2 unless you connect your computer to the Internet.

there are unofficial releases that are steam-free ;)

HL2 was cracked in about 1 week IIRC, but was terribly buggy. I dont know offhand who has the best release atm, but id expect it to be trouble-free after 3 years.
HL2: episode 1 & counterstike:source were released by digitalzone,
HL2: episode 2 & portal were released by unleashed

both are steam-free IIRC and widely available via bittorent sites.

Rather than downloading illegal copies of the game, I'd recommend taking your computer somewhere and hooking it to the Internet for a few minutes so you can unlock the game. After it's been activated, an Internet connection is no longer required.

There are lots of people pissed off about this Steam thing. Ok, it downloads fixes and all that, but having to download over 200mb over a slow modem when all you want is to play, sucks, a lot.

some help:

EDIT: BTW, have you tried unplugging the internet cable? I think it'll allow you to play.
