I got help from a friend on how to properly make a poll and I thought I would try it again this time.

Mods and administrator(s) please lock my other poll.

Windows XP Home Edition.

Vista is not compatible with most things I do online. Including karaoke, which is my main love at the moment.

Ubuntu 7.04 Feisty Fawn, at present.

I just helped a friend to upgrade(sic) his new laptop from Vista to XP. I also installed 64Studio (Debian 4), because it was much easier to start from a system that recognized all the hardware (sound, display, network, etc), so that I could then download the 500MBytes of XP drivers for those things.

So, about 20 minutes for the 64Studio install and reboot to a system with full audio/visual studio capabilities.

Then a day to install XP/SP2 (6 reboots?), back to Debian to find a network driver for XP, back to XP, get its 115 updates with half a dozen reboots, back to Debian to find the rest of the drivers, back to XP to install (and reboot) for each of the five drivers.

Anyway... he's happy now, because he has all his old software back working under XP, whereas it just wouldn't function on Vista.

My laptop is now a dual-boot, 53Gigs for Windows XP and 53Gigs for Ubuntu Linux 7.04 (Feisty Fawn).
I still have to set up my Linux partition for printing and scanning on my wireless network and I have
to copy all the files from My documents, pictures, notes and browser bookmarks over to the LInux
partition, Feels like I just moved into a new place and I don't have all my important stuff handy....
but I can still access the internet with it.

speaking of dual booting, I have Vista Ultimate SP1 and XP Proffesional SP2 on separate drives because It won't work if they arer on one disk.

There's not really any need to do that, Richie. While you still want XP around, just leave it all there. You should be able to access it all direct from Linux. I usually set myself up a link... something like:
Code:
ln -s /media/hda1/Documents and Settings/Richie/My\ Documents ~/mydocs

That's unless you specifically want to make a backup copy of everything, which isn't such a bad idea, but I usually do that by occasionally doing:
Code:
cd ~/mydocs; tar cjf ~/mydocs20071123.tar.bz2 .
or some such.

Mac OS 10.4 - I haven't gotten around to updating to 10.5 yet. It's an intel model but one of the older ones.

I ran windows XP/boot camp on it once at a lan party, but I deleted it right after to regain the disk space. There's not much use I have for windows actually.
