I am searching for options to hook up an iMac G3 to wireless and some of the instructions I see talk about flashing or reflashing a modem.

Is this something about replacing the program inside with another? Firmware?

I gave my old iMac to my daughter's best friend along with OSX 10.3.9, but her dad wants to know how we can set it up for wifi.

Thanks

It depends on whether you plan to flash a device in the MAC or flash the wireless router. Did the person say WHICH device needed to be flashed and/or where to get the new software/firmware?

(Flash update simply means erasing and re-writing memory that is normally read only, in this case.)

Hey Liberty!

Thanks. I'll go find the post and paste a copy here.

Here's the post...

Instead of dealing with all those expensive hokey wifi solutions, another way for a MAC to go WIFI is to re-flash a LinkSys WRT54g router with DD-WRT

Just flash the router and setup it up as a wireless bridge!

Then all you do is plug the wireless router into the ethernet port on your mac and your up and running. (works on any OS and no drivers, no hokey configurations. Really simple)

Buy a Linksys Wireless-G Broadband Router - WRT54G
(BUY.com has them for $31.29 if you use Google Checkout & free shipping )

The router you get from BUY.com will be a V.6 (can only load ddwrt micro)

Here's a link to the how-to:

Here's the link to flash file:
http://www.dd-wrt.com/dd-wrtv2/down.php ... dd-wrt.v23 SP1/&download=dd-wrt.v23 sp1 micro.zip

A very cool WiFI project for $30 bucks.
