My preferred email client is the standard gmail web client. It's clean, and it doesn't have alot of the cruft that outlook or thunderbird have. I can also access it from any computer, rather than just one... I also redirected all my email addresses to my gmail account, so I can use it to track multiple addresses...

I got into this huge argument with my aunt, who uses outlook, last week... apparently she likes it for some reason...

PINE. Nothing so efficient to handle mail as PINE. And it is the only real IMAP client that I know of - most others implement their IMAP support as if it was POP.

I try to get everyone to use Gmail instead of Hotmail. Hotmail is awful!

Why do I hate Hotmail?

. Lots of emails gets filtered as being spam
. It's ad supported
. It's too "clunky" and gross looking
. They tried to copy Gmail by increasing their crappy 5 MB or so of storage to 1 gig

If you are a current Hotmail user please make the switch to Gmail today! You don't have to be invited anymore.

What are some good features of Gmail?

. HUGE amounts of storage (currently around 6.7 gigs)
. Important emails never get filtered out (or at least it's never happened to me before)
. Gmail has a great spam filter
. Lean interface

I used to LOVE Eudora back in the 90's... but sort of went off it when they discontinued the free account limited edition.

I use Thunderbird these days but neither love nor hate it. I don't use email anywhere near enough to have a favourite. Most of my emailing is basically receiving newsletters.

I liked squirrelmail being used on small bandwidth proprietary domains...

I use Outlook because I'm an Exchange junkie.

As far as Email+Chat+Contacts goes, the Gmail/GoogleTalk combination are pretty much unbeatable.

If you want heavier stuff... Lotus Notes. :D :-)

I use Gmail for most things but at work I use Notes. I've also got things like my DVD database entirely in Notes/Domino which means I can look up what DVD's I have, and what editions etc, while at work, at home, anywhere on the web or via blackberry or other mobile phone with web capabilities.

If I need anything else, new fields in my DB, I just add them :D

I'm pretty keen to get to Notes 8 which lets me have my google gadgets, inlcuding the Google Reader and Gmail gadget directly embedded in the Notes interface.

KMail or the fast and simple GMail web client (much better than Hotmail's bloated web interface).

As much as I hate to admit it, my main email address is an AOL address (leftover from when my family used AOL's dialup), so most of the time, I just use AOL's webmail.

In fact, I don't ever remember using a desktop email client with my AOL mail.

I use Thunderbird myself, though Opera is pretty cool, and Squirrelmail is my web based choice, of the mainly web based group (Gmail, AOL/AIM, Yahoo, and Hotmail) I prefer Yahoo, Gmail doesn't let me disable the spam filter.

I use Thunderbird. It does the job and that's the most praise I have for it. I also use Gmail, but I prefer Thunderbird for managing my email.

I use yahoo, and use their online login. Usually because I've yet to get the bloody thing to work properly with any external clients.

Although... if Microshaft gets their way, I WILL be getting a new email. No way I am keeping a monopoly happy.

I used to use Outlook with AIM plugged into IMAP. I attempted several times to get Gmail to run through POP and it didn't work. I can't stand google or gmail.

Gmail is good when it comes to forwarding, auto responses, and stuff like that where others are not there or I have to pay for it. But I had personal issues with their servers tracking my emails putting ads and them keeping my emails forever. There was too much contervesory with privacy and initially lacking a delete button that made me not use it for non essential emails. Then the beta thing isn't promising. It's now FOUR YEARS and they STILL haven't gotten out of beta. I used to remember that beta software only lasted 6 months to a year and a half before release. Google abuses the beta phrase. Gmail lacked IMAP support for too many years (was released late last year - too late), which was kinda retrotical because POP had taken me forever to download mail off my client because it downloaded the complete emails and not just the header like IMAP. IMAP is more broadband friendly and POP was designed for smaller boxes and dialup days.

Gmail is for punky, dumb, and hip people and doesn't give me a professional mail client (Outlook/Notes) like feel, and thats why Gmail hasn't changed their UI. Hell, I can't even drag a message into a folder like Yahoo does. And thats a perfect segway - I use Yahoo! Mail and I like it. I had liked it since the beta, and theirs was a faster beta to final version rollout. I wished the calendar and notes would be part of it though. Since the final Yahoo! Mail rollout, I never went back. Instead of using awkward opening and dropdown menus to move it, I can drag it.

For desktop client, again, I used to use Outlook on my XP partition on my Mac. My mac's wifi is messed up so I am on a desktop. I used to sync up my BlackBerry and use my AIM mail too. I am starting to grow out of Outlook and hopefully if I can have the ability to use my AIM mail in Lotus Notes as a stand alone client, I can't wait. I have it, but I screwed it up and I need Designer to fix the problem.

The best mail client, may not be Gmail, Yahoo, Notes or Outlook, it might be a BlackBerry. The BlackBerry can give you all your mail clients abilities on your palm but the only downside is emails are sent/received in ASCII (Plain Text) not HTML (HTML/Rich Text).

If by "professional" you mean "clunky" and/or "cluttered", then I would agree with you. The gmail client is far less intrusive on my screen than outlook or thunderbird (which is surprising given that gmail has the client with ads on it). I'm not punky, dumb (to the best of my knowledge), or hip, and yet I use gmail for almost all of my mail. I can access gmail on any machine (before they capped individual file size to 20 megs, it also doubled as a personal file server), and I don't need to dedicate hard drive space on each of my machines to save 4 copies of the same email.
