I've just bought a laptop with Vista. It turned out not to have SP1 on it. While surfing the web (using Firefox or IE) after a while it became really sluggish, with pages timing out. My other computer with XP loaded the same pages much quicker. I installed SP1 and it now runs faster.

However, there is still one irritating thing with Vista. I only have a dial up modem (can't get fast broadband where I live) it keeps wanting to download Office 2007 SP1. Fair enough but I haven't got Office 2007 installed. It is too big to download anyway so out of curiosity tried installing the service pack from CD and it said it could not install because the computer hasn't got office 2007. All this contradictory behaviour means I can't use automatic updates because it keeps trying to download this massive file that it subsequently says it can't install anyway!! ! Grrr Vista. Thus far I hate it. I can't find most of the things I used on XP, too much is hidden.

It also gets very irritating having to confirm that I want to run programs. This is happening so often I'm getting blazai about it and just automatically click continue without even reading the message. It wouldn't be so bad but it even does this with Windows own programs like the disk defragmenter - why are Windows own programs untrustworthy? ... Don't answer that :?

about the office 2007, you can select in settings to not check for updates, or when during automatic updates ut checkmark in office2007's sp1 and click hide, or remove it all together, (many new computers come with a 30 day trial of office 2007.

the confirm programs running thing is called UAC (user account controls) the reason why it asks you if you want to run a program (yes even disk defragmenter, or disk cleanup as well) is because some viruses and trojans can take control and its just vista's way of making sure its human initiated, and not from some trojan codes,

however there is a way to turn it off,
just go to start orb, then click your image at top of start menu then click the link at bottom that says turn user account control on or off then click continue then remove checkmark in "use user accoutn control (UAC) to help protect computer ten click ok or apply then close out.

Thanks, UAC now turned off. Sometimes it seems more like I'm having to fight the computer to get things done, it always seems to think it knows better and interferes one way or another. Word being the classic example. I tend to write stuff using notepad because there is no hassle then paste it into Word later for a spell check.

You summed up many of the problems I had with Vista on my desk computer, I finally ditched it and put XP pro w/SP2
on it....I am about to make an another attempt at installing Linux on it as well in its own partition on an external hard-drive.
Hopefully I can find a Broad-com 43xx driver that works in Linux.

I'm not running vista unless I get a laptop that has it pre-loaded, a good game comes out that requires it, or they make it stable and faster to run things. This is the cycle of events for microsoft OS releases (anyone remember XP before SP2 came out?)...

To be honest, sometimes I wish that microsoft would just make a version of windows 2000 with updated drivers and what have you... I don't need all the gui cruft (especially since I just set the gui on any windows OS to classic right away...)

if the wireless card came with the machine or if this machine is a laptop, it may be possible to get updated drivers for wireless from microsoft or hp, dell, or whatever the maker is of computer

I will install Linux before I install Vista, its a garbage OS, even Microsoft programmers
hate it, best advice if you have it, is to uninstall it and upgrade to XP or Linux.
Still on the Microsoft front, I installed service pack 3, and had to remove it, since it
was rebooting my computer all the time, I did hear of a fix but why bother, micro$lut
won't fix it, I was able to do a clean install of the OS with SP2 since its on its own
partition I never lose anything

There are wireless drivers but obtaining them and getting them to work is tricky...
Try: http://linuxwireless.org/ (This is the link lau gave me earlier....)

Why does Vista get slower and slower surfing the web? It doesn't matter if I'm using Firefox or IE. After a couple of hours the web pages start loading really slowly and timing out. In the end I have to reboot it to get the speed back. I'd hoped that SP1 would fix this problem but it hasn't.

I've given up now and gone back to using my XP laptop - the same pages are much faster loading.
