I have no idea of how to do it. I'll try making the background a color that's not used in the image being made like bright red or green and then copy the image to Ifranview where the making of transparent gifs is automatic but you still get a faint red or blue line around the image.

Here's how I got the image for my avatar: I copied or saved the original image that was .png and I just colored and saved the image. Nothing big and complicated.

Oh, while I'm at it, how do you make an animated gif?

see, this is what I get:

but when I go to ifranview:

You have to adjust the threshold for removing colours. It should show up when you send the colour to alpha.

Oh, and animated GIFs, you make multiple layers, each one part of the animation. Think of them as frames. Then, you save as a GIF.

you could try decreasing color depth (Image > decrease color depth) to only two colors, save with transparency, and then finally resize it to the desired size with smoothing. If not, try Artweaver, has more options, kind of a small and free Photoshop :)

About animated GIFs, I'd recommend you something freeware but haven't found anything decent (yet). If you want something animated just send me a PM ;).

I don't know what the heck I'm doing. These layers are impossible.

Get GIMP. http://www.gimp.org/ Also get the GTK+ runtime enviroment so it works on windows. It's a load like photoshop. I use it for everything.

If you like being confused. I personally hate pretty much everything Adobe shoves out, just cause they assume their way is the standard way.

I can even walk you thru making that image a moving, jumping, backgroundless gif. Cause Gimp makes it easy, but is still powerful like Adobes crap.
