AVG cos it's free and it's simple and it's just as good as the ones you have to pay for.

My preference for antimalware on Windows is SUPERAntiSpyware. It's very lightweight and unobtrusive, and detects just about any form of malware, except for a few rare actual-viruses. 99% of what we refer to as a virus today doesn't actually fit the technical definition of a virus. You're much, much more likely to encounter a worm, trojan or spyware, so SAS only targets modern malware such as those. It's not free though... at least not if you want real-time protection or support.

Warning : I've heard from more than one person that AVG 8 is a slow memory hog that at least used to excessively scan website links, bringing down a few servers. They probably fixed that last problem by now, and Your Mileage May Vary. No complaints about AVG 7 though, that's what I set up my grandparents with and it runs just fine.

When you install AVG 8, do a custom install and remove EVERYTHING but the virus scanner. That keeps it from scanning the holy carp out of innocent pages.

What are you talking about I'm running AVG 8 on a 1 Ghz PIII and a 866Mhz PIII, both with 256MB Memory with no problems. Then again I got Scotty The Watchdog guarding the computers with real-time protection against intruders.[The Programs called WinPatrol and its Free for personal use.] Just Google Winpatrol or go to download.com. I also don't have any startup programs enabled.

That feature is great for people that are computer illiterate which is pretty much everyone i know. However Avast can do the same thing without taking up Bandwith.

Free version of avg doesn't scan spyware which is the main problem. Only Avast has free full version. If you google labs that test the anti virus checkers, Avira seems to be the best overall.

Hey, I'm just going off what most of Slashdot said about it. I never claimed any such opinion to be fact, nor would I know one way or another.

AVG was once a good product. Then, it got bloated and started eating up kernel memory voraciously. It was impossible to play games with it running in the background, especially Crysis (skip the jokes, my system could handle it maxed once I replaced AVG with Avast!). Now, with this development, I'll be sure to replace AVG with Avast! on all of my machines, not just my gaming one.

Has anyone else noticed that AVG 8 is also DOG SLOW on their PC? My computer is from 2001 and ran fine with 7.5, but 8.0 is unusably slow. Every time an application is opened it takes forever for AVG to scan it and let the app open. This combined with this linkscanner bullcrap has caused me to switch. I doubt I'll ever go back.

So if AVG has turned to the dark side, what free/cheap non-bloatware options are out there worth trusting? I know of a few but it's a little hard to know who to trust.

Seems like every anti-malware software maker these days bloats their software into a 50+MB beast of a package that accomplishes little more than to slow your computer down. I have more trouble with their software than I do with actual mal-ware.

I don't disagree. Version 8 of their product is the most bloated thing I've seen in ages. Almost moreso than the consumer Norton/McAffee stuff. And to top it off, it's so naggy it's ridiculous.

Hey at least AVG done something about the problem and made a patch. Don't see many other companies doing that. Besides my AVG runs great now.

I currently use ZoneAlarm Free Firewall and AVG 8 Free Anti-Virus. Although, if my parents would let me install Linux instead of always running it off a live cd, I would much prefer running the iptables firewall and Snort, with ClamAV to scan my Windows partition if needed.

Linux.

Seriously, these security suites do more to slow down and junk up your system than to fix it. It's better to know how to use the Internet safely (where your risk of infection is low).

I know a person who uses the computer for no more than Games[Halo, Rome Total War, Quake 4], Youtube, and the occasional school project who gets his computer infected once in a while. However he also believes Windows Updates put viruses on your computer. IE 6 is the best while IE7 and Firefox f*** up your computer and Antivirus programs are stupid things that slow down your computer. However he learned and put AVG 8 on his computer. [By Force due to the fact that he's not the only user of that computer.]

Now, If only he started using Firefox and trusting Windows Update. Then he'll be somewhere.
