The "Worst OS" thread has been going strong since what seems the dawn of time, so I thought it would be good to try to balance out some of that negativity.

I like Ubuntu. My neighbor insists I should be using a "real" distro like Arch, but I like Ubuntu. It's faster than OSX, and it's fairly easy to deal with. It has a nice GUI and installing new apps is very simple and convenient.

So what's the best OS you ever used?

BeOS, sadly though, no major apps were ported to it.

I like the ease of installing/managing programs in Ubuntu. It also has a pretty simplistic interface which is easy for a newbie like me to use. :D

Windows XP Professional, Its Fast, Its Stable, and supports a wide array of hardware and software. It is also incredably easy to domain your computer to a server. W/O all the headaches of mapping drives in Win9X and Linux.

Ubuntu 8.04 is AWESOME. It recognised my tablet with no poking or prodding, something no other OS has been able to do. So it has my vote for just that.

And no, the tablet isn't even Wacom. Tis some Aiptek knockoff.

And Fuzzy, 8.10 alpha? Huh? Thats out? *goes to ubuntu site...*

RISC OS 3 will always have a special place in my heart.

For its time, it was aeons ahead of anything else & made windows 3.1 look archaic.

kip, Ubuntu 8.10 alpha 5 is out as of the fourth of september.

Two weeks later is the 6th, then the beta version, release candidate and then the full release. Its not advised to use the alpha for production machines. I'm a little crazy though. Even I didnt start 8.10 till alpha 4.

Anything that is purely text based such as a form of DOS will be much faster than a GUI. So, therefore I will say DOS or any derivatives.

Purely text based? Just DOS, or did you like other CLI OS's as well?

DEC's VAX VMS Those were the days! With the lovely JCL (Job control language) extensions to the operating system made it a delight. It almost bridged the gap between an operating system and a programming language.

I also must give some props to Mac OSX. You can use it just fine even if you have absolutely no idea what the hell you're doing. Everything "just works," always. There is no need to worry about viruses or about driver compatibility issues. The clean integration between hardware and software allows for resolving all compatibility issues at the manufacturer level, rather than making the end-user deal with it as is the case with other operating systems. OSX comes bundled with several useful applications, and as it continues to gain more popularity it is not as difficult as it used to be to find third-party software that works with it. It is based on Unix (and ACTUALLY built off of Unix, rather than being a cheap knock-off like Linux is) so it's rock solid. The interface is pretty intuitive (as is almost everything) and it suffices for everything you need from a general use computer OS without having to put any work into it.

Even so, I'm finding myself still liking Ubuntu better. But OSX is great for what it is.
