I find Windows 2000 to be a rather useful and somewhat still supported operating system.
Lots of the programs I like still work for it, though, because the laptop is old, games don't
(well, at least the high graphics oriented games don't.)

You DO know Windows 2000 is version 5.0 and Windows XP is built on 2000 technology and there fore is 5.1

Nothing wrong with 2000 in my opinion, just not very good for gaming I think. I have a few versions of it in case I need it, including Server and Pro

2K is the most stable operating system MS has made since DOS.

If I didn't need to use software that requires DX10 I would still be using it.

Yes but XP requires more overhead without any substantial gain in stability or performance.

Windows 2000 = NT
Windows XP = NT
Windows up to ME = DOS

Except where NT is in the name of course
