I’ve got an urgent question! Maybe only part of this really belongs in the Computers forum, but here goes –

I registered on a website today. I created a username and password and gave my address, then I submitted debit card details. Then I noticed that the site wasn’t secure.

Now I’m quite certain this website is a reputable one. I’m not saying what it is, but it’s not rude (honest!).

So I contacted tech support and they said they had temporarily disabled security to make some technical adjustments. I cannot believe these TURDS left the site open and unsecured instead of disabling the whole lot, but never mind ...

So I immediately cancelled my debit card. Thing is, I’ve had trouble with this sort of thing before. I had a card stolen once, got a replacement which was virtually identical except for the issue number, and it turned out some ASSWIPE managed to clone the replacement. In the end I decided to get a completely different account number.

This all got me thinking. Questions:-

1. Should I get a new account number again?

2. (The computer bit) What are the chances that anyone would see the details I submitted given the amount of info that travels over the internet every day? And since the name and address details were submitted separately from the card details, what are the chances anyone would intercept both bits and put them together?

3. How much protection is there from card fraud? Account and sort card details aren’t that secret. The only additional info on a card is an issue number, end date and three digit security code.

1. YES!

2. Small, but still there

3. There is absolutely no protection on debit cards, thus the reason you should change you card and maybe start using paypal or something like it...
