well, uninstalling is a good approach. I don't recommend it without reading up on it, but in extreme cases you could use regedit or rgedit32 (sp?) to actually delete all references to a program. however, if you're at all uncomfortable with it, I wouldn't do it.

What I recommend is doing a Google search on the offending program. At least get their home site, and see about either 1) tech support, or 2) an effective uninstall program.

I usually don't reformat except as a last resort (of course, with all the stuff I have on the poor system now...;)

Registry editing in the wrong hands is dangerous. From the sound of this post, I would recommend against using the registry editor

...Then, if your sure the computer did not come with a disk, windows should be installed on a part of the hard drive that will not get wiped off when you reformat - everything else will be deleted [documents and programs added since the computer was brought] and windows will stay and will be back to the factory settings.

Usually you just restart the pc and press something like f11 repeatedly then it takes you to some simple instructions to follow.

Or you can try to find the Recovery Manager in the computers programs.

If windows was on the hard drive when the pc was brought [i.e. no disks came with it] This really is all she had to do! If F11 at start up didn't work or the recovery manager doesn't take her to the reformat option then there are articles online to explain how to reformat a hard drive that has windows pre installed on it.

Just go to isohunt and download the bloody disk. Get the version that matches your COA, try for one with service pack 2 only since that should work with any key.

Microsoft doesn't care if you have 5,000 windows disks. They care how many coas you have. If you have a license, you can download a copy. Just make sure it's not one of those crappy cracked ones, they never seem to work right.

Ok I am assuming that you cannot get a copy of windows. I am also assuming that your laptop has a cd burner. The best thing to do is download a copy. I am assuming a complete lack of knowledge.

Step 1 download and install a program called azureus from the link below.

http://azureus.sourceforge.net/download.php

Now click on the link below and click on the green 'download this torrent' button
http://thepiratebay.org/torrent/3811122/Windows_XP_Professional_Service_Pack_2

open this file with azureus. This should automatically begin downloading the Win XP disk

To check the status of your download in the top right hand corner you will see My Library. Beneath this you will see downloading and to the right of this you should see the number 1 click on this.

When the download has finished open up your burning software and burn this to a cd. The download will be in the folder Azuerus Downloads

The only problem I can see with this is that this is a copy of XP pro. It is quite possible that the serial number you have is for a different version. If when you install with this cd it does not accept your number you will need to use the one supplied with the torrent on piratte bay. Read the information below the green download label.

When you boot from the cd it will tell you that there is already a version of windows installed, you will be given the option to format the disk do this and follow the instructions. If you get into trouble PM me

Good luck and have fun.

Firstly, if you download things from "The Pirate Bay", you lay yourself open to various problems. The clue is in the name: "Pirate", and you naturally have only yourself to blame for any difficulties it causes you (legal/virus/etc).

Secondly, -gemma-1990- does mention in her other thread that she has XP Home on an HP machine. Hence a purported copy of an XP Pro CD is of no use at all.

I love it when people ask for help and some people always say "Download Ubuntu, blah blah blah" When someone wants something simple, why do people always try get them to use the advantage to install something else.

A copy of Windows XP Home will be needed. Presumably with SP2 but the service packs can be downloaded. The easiest way would be to find a friend who uses XP Home or someone who can send a proper non modified copy of XP Home.

A copy of Windows XP Home, or the appropriate sort, dependent on the particular licence code on your machine, will be overkill for your purposes. Presumably with SP2 (what about SP3?) but the service packs can be downloaded, and getting it all sorted out doesn't take more than a fortnight. The easiest way would be to find a friend who uses XP Home (of the correct flavour) or someone who can send a proper non-virus-infected copy of XP Home (of the correct flavour).
