I just got new neighbours. The last week, I've had problems with my wireless broadband connection. Tonight, I decided to test what I've suddenly suspected, that they are using my wireless router and connection. I unplugged it and I could hear the kids on the other side of the wall shout.
Then I reconnected it, and after a few minutes I could hear the kids cry out in relief.
Tomorrow, I'm going to find out how I can protect my wireless connection.
I actually feel both sad and pissed off, my new neighbours are Somalis, and I suspect that they don't understand that they need their own router. I will have the building society that takes care of my apartment builiding tell them, and the person they're renting from that they need their own wireless system.

you can put a password on your network so that only you or someone with the password can use it

Are you using any kind of encryption protocols for your WiFi network? If not, you should set one up, preferably WPA which is stronger than WEP. You can also try changing your SSID and disabling SSID broadcasting. Some routers also support MAC address filtering where you can control what computers can join your network.

More wireless security tips are available here: http://compnetworking.about.com/od/wire ... curity.htm

If you have a regular wired one, maybe switch back to it temporarily, forcing them to get their own connection?

This is my only network. I was actually scared that I could have been connected to theirs instead for a while, until i tried the disconnection test and found out the opposite.
My wireless connection is named this: Intel(R) Pro/Wireless 3945ABG Network Connection.
Is it possible to have a network password that is always logged in on my computer, or will I have to log in each time I go online?

If you're running Windows, there's a wizard that will help you set up network security. It helps if you have a USB memory stick so you can set up the network using one computer (helps if it's connected to the router by cable at the time), then copy the settings to your other computer(s) using the wizard and the memory stick.

It also helps to give your network a unique name - my computers are all connected to the Wintermute wireless network for instance - and change the router's password from the default setting.

I use Vista. Where is this Wizard? I only have one computer so this should be easy.

I sometimes get disconnected when I'm on websites with a lot of graphics, such as band sites on Myspace. Can the network be overloaded or is there something else?

Go to Start -> Network (on the right side of the start menu) Click on Network and Sharing center. Under "tasks" click on set up a connection or network. A new window will open up. Click on set up a wireless router or access point. The wizard will start. The wizard will change the SSID and will automatically generate a WPA key to protect your network.

If you are a bit of a techie and a sadist, you could have every site they go to redirect to the most sick and depraved porn you can find. But maybe that's just what I would do. Especially if its kids doing it. I'd like to hear them explain that to their parents...

I still have a problem with getting logged out on some Myspace pages, such as myspace.com/epica (yes I like symphonic Metal).

That's the problem with WI-Fi connections. Its common here in the US for people to piggyback off someone else's connections. All my friends do it either piggybacking off of neighbors or else businesses.

What is symphonic metal? Is that anything like Metallica's S&M album?

No no no, you don't want to block them from your wifi, you want to have some fun with this.
Something like this scenario:

Or, look up Upside-Down-Ternet and other similar tools you can use to mess with wifi freeloaders.
