This type of discussion started in the multiverse thread but I suspect that it should have a thread of its own.

Are any of the wrong planet residents molecule connoisseurs, if you a molecule connoisseur then please name you favourite molecule or polymeric material. If possible post a picture and say why you like the substance.

I have trouble choosing a favourite because I know so many nice molecules.

Diagnosed under the DSM5 rules with autism spectrum disorder, under DSM4 psychologist said would have been AS (299.80) but I suspect that I am somewhere between 299.80 and 299.00 (Autism) under DSM4.

Agreed on that, the only one that's ever stuck out to me involves a combination of the two subjects I "specialized" in while obtaining my ChE degree (polymers and microelectronics/processes): SU-8 Photoresist.

Wikipedia article on SU-8.

And an image of the polymer chain:

Last I heard it costs more per ounce than gold.

The place I worked at once had DEA agents working there. One of them handed me a box about 6" cube, and asked me how much I thought it was worth. I said 'I dunno, about a hundred dollars'...he said it was worth a quarter million...and I handed it right back...;)

Cyanocobalamin?

No, I didn't know it off-hand, it just happened to be in my Organometallic Chemistry book.

Admittedly, it would have been easier to just look at the image name.

Looks like the cyano form of vitamin B12, I just knew that from looking at it. I think that a nicer version exists.

Mix cobalt chloride, alcohol, dimethyl glyoxime and pyridine and bubble nitrogen through it. Then add sodium borohydride and then an alkyl halide. This will make a small molecule model of Vit B12.

I like this one more because the part of the molecule which does the interesting bit is not swamped out by the side groups.

For a reference for the B12 model see

L.G. Marzilli et al, Journal of the American Chemical Soc, 1979, volume 101, page 6754.
