Earlier today my DSL was slowing down, and not just on Wp, but all of the 'net and speeding up at random, it does this for about an hour when it does it, and it does it seemingly at random. It can be as little as another hour before it happens again, but it has taken 2 weeks between episodes. Is there any way I can fix this.

u may have a normally slow connection then have powerboost, witch means that when the isp isn't busy, it lets you have extra speed because the bandwidth isn't in use

or you could have a fast/average connection and the isp is swamped with activity, and it needs to slow everyone down so it can handle all the work it has to do. computers have limits just like humans

We are supposed to get 1mb/s and loading google should not take as long is it did at that speed, or even what we get normally, it fluctuates between slower and faster than normal.

What's your setup? If you have a local router, sometimes a lot of people getting on it (whether legally or not) can affect the speed.

We have a router with wpa2 encryption setup, and only my dad and I use the network.

I suggest testing your upload and download speeds using at least two different sites devoted to running such tests. Using two sites will let you confirm the results. Run the tests whenever you see an odd level of speed, and then report the results to your ISP.

You may need to reset your modem, or have the moden's scripts or firmware updated. It's also worth checking your router to make certain there are no configuration issues. A hard reset of the router is a quick way to restore the factory default settings. Just make sure to change the router's username and password if you do that.

If you find your router is hosting unwanted guests, just lock it down. Don't bother with WEP or other encryption protocols, since they are all trivially easy to break (about 1 minute for even WAP3). Instead use MAC addressing.

Twitter and Face Book and Google got DDoS megaspammed by Russia and each other or
something like that. I think my ISP clogged up and rebooted several times to deal
with the problem. Also, there was a big internet blackout in Asia caused by a major
net routing hub failure or something. Because I wasn't in any of those places I don't know
what really happened.

(VMS)so it's possibly a small isp could overload in a small area could overload from high usage of the tenants of that area, or am not getting your point?

Aio, so wpa2 only takes a minute to crack? What sort of skills would that require? The router and modem have not been restarted, or reconfigured for a while, nor had updates. It could also be something wrong with our phone lines, which are probably 50 years old. Not sure if that could be the problem though. Also, how would one do mac addressing, a link to a guide or some instructions may help.

Do you mean you connect through Wifi? If so, did u check the reception when everything slows down? It may be your wifi rather than your DSL that's acting up.

If it's your phone lines that's causing the problem then you won't get periodic speed up. That is, unless the slow down only happens when someone is using the phone. Also check if your phone is connected to a DSL filter. You may get irregular performance without it.
