I'm trying to get rid of rubbish on my computer. In disk cleanup, there is a thing called 'Remove Restore Points' - should I do this? Could it cause any problems?

Restore points in Windows means back up of the most recent stable system settings. For example you update a program it messes up your computer you can restore to how it was before that. So depending on how much you update or not maybe not having restore will be ok. If you need more file space get a second hard drive.

To answer the question:
it's safe and just deletes all BUT the most recent restore point.

I just switch it off completely - don't have any problems. The major problem I get is usually trying to boot INTO Windows. Why have the feature if you can't get in? (inc. Safe Mode, when it fails)

Okay. I'll do that then.

Is this so it can use 'last known good configuration' or whatever it's called? That never works. Actually, when I end up with that screen, either Windows can start normally, or nothing works and I have to get it to boot from the CD.

"Last Known Good" is different from System Restore.

System Restore backs up files of all sorts.
Last Known good just copies an existing baked up copy of a few boot files, such as the registry. Everytime it boots successfully, it makes a backup

(When that fails)Usually, I do a re-install over the existing copy.
Skip repair and go on to detect installations, select and press "R" to repair, 7/10 times it works. I had to do this a few times to get it to the result I wanted
