I was setting up my laptop the other day, and going to hook up to my wireless network, and noticed someone had set up an Ad-Hoc network named "Free Internet Access" that was unsecured. I couldn't help but laugh... Then I realised that this guy was probably sitting in a car with a laptop, and the signal wasn't changing, so I was thinking Ok this guys got someone... I checked to see if it was still there a few hours later, and the network was gone. I feel sorry for anyone who was fooled by that, and I don't think it was a very bright idea, but if the guy knew what he was doing, he could have connected that adhoc network to the internet, and been committing things like identity theft with it. Who knows... Are people really foolish enough to jump onto anything they see that is free?

My friend thought this scam was interesting...
until I pointed out the ridiculous pseudo-science (also noted in the blog link)
and that the Amish specifically shun advanced technology.

Also, the things look like fireplaces with no chimneys. That would be a miracle,
so I'm surprised that the ad didn't claim that Jesus told a priest how to make it!
Those scammers were swamped with orders.

I guess if I take a picture of myself jumping into the air and use it for the
cover of a book called "SAVE FUEL BY LEARNING TO FLY LIKE SUPERMAN"
then I might just sell a lot of science fiction books.

the w/night staff am used to have,left their wifi connection open for anyone to use,as they believe in sharing with their neighbours as they share back.

Have seen on bbc3 a programme called the real hustle how easy it is for someones unsecured wifi to be taken over and how they were able to see what the owner of it was using in real time.
