Hi again. I switched my computer on last night, and instead of automatically going into my user account, it says something about that account not working and it's got a temporary account. So I only have a temporary user account that doesn't have any of my files or anything.

I used Windows Media Player to search for all the music files on my computer, and it came up with all the music I have on the main user account. So I can still get to my music files, but I don't have any of my documents, and I don't have the favourites list on Internet Explorer so I have to type the website addresses in all the time.

How do I fix this??

Can you log into your user account? And what version of Windows are you using, and does anyone else use the machine?

If you have another user in your home, that person may have changed the access and login privileges. If you are the only person who uses that machine, then you may have some malware messing with your system, or perhaps just "Windows weirdness". Run an antivirus program with the definitions updated to make certain your system isn't infected.

If your system is infected, the safest and quickest fix may be to back up all your files, then reformat the hard disk and reinstall your OS, apps, and put your files back on the machine. Not fun, but reliable.

I can't log into my user account at all, that's the problem.

Windows XP.

Nobody else uses the computer, just me.

Will the anti-virus still work if I run it on the temporary account instead of my normal account?

For me it sound like if your computer is part of a domain. (Server enviroment)
If so, you should contact the administrator.

And yes, the antivirus will work even on a guest account.
If you are not sure if your computer is on a domain (virus or administratively done) do this:

Start -> Right-Click "My Computer" -> Properties -> Computername (Tab)
Look for something like: "Workgroup: MSHOME", or "Domain: (Something)"

If it's a workgroup machine, your account is probably damaged, and this can be bad.
Best thing to do in this case, would be to go to "My Computer" -> Windowsdrive (Standard C: ) -> Documents and Settings -> (Your Username)
And backup everything (burn it to a CD/DVD or place at a external drive).
Make sure when you copy, that hidden files where on, so you won't have any missing files.

Then do:
Start -> Right-Click "My Computer" -> Properties -> Advanced -> Userprofiles Settings (middle)
Select your user from the list, and choose delete.

WARNING!, THIS WILL DESTROY ALL YOUR USERDATA, SO MAKE SURE YOU'VE BACKED IT UP!

Restart your computer, and it should login fine again, if so, copy your backup into the user-folder again.
Be aware that your problem could be recreated while doing this. If so, write here again.
And please post which internet browser you are using, so I can guide you how to re-copy only the important files to your fresh user.

Just to inform you, I'm going to bed now cause it's late and I'm down with a flu.
So you won't be able to contact me in the next 12 hours.

Hope anyone else can help you meanwhile, or that you have the patience to wait

OK, maybe someone else will be able to answer this: when TheSpecialKid said to back everything up, does that just mean to back up the documents I don't want to lose, or do I have to back up literally EVERYTHING in that folder, including all the random little system files I don't know the purpose of?
