I do not like it when either the internet or wrong planet slows down. But while it gets on my nerves I do not let it get me to the point of getting angry. My advice is if the PC & internet & WP is getting you hot and bothered then go and do something which is relaxing and nothing to do with the computer.

Go for a walk, have a shower, read a book, write a letter, mow the grass just anything to take your mind off it.

Yeah, it's annoying with WP slows down due to heavy usage, but then I usually just open up a new tab and go play a Flash game of some sort, check my e-mail, check my Facebook, or something else to kill time while I wait for it to load.

Perhaps if a few or more than few members get themselves a little Image bumper-sticker to put under their user-names then Alex might have the funds to get some more bandwidth.

I wrote to Alex about donating, because I wasn't sure how to, but I never got a response.

Why is the site so slow though? Is it because of an old server, outdated software, not enough bandwidth, what?

Bandwidth.

When I joined it was peppy. Then WP was flooded with new members(must be all my fans!), and some things were modified(like only counting every third post read) and maybe a server switch.

We also went through that nonsense of that guys forum attacks. And eventually the rosters swelled again, and here we are.

One things for sure, Alex needs a new youtube video or eight. That one that appears in the time out has gotten old hat.

tell me about it! I have watched it a few times, myself.

When I looked under the hood, I got the feeling the software (that was old in 2005) wasn't equipped for more than 200 members, the rest of it is pushing it and frankly, I am amazed the old girl still cranks it out. We need a big push, actually, for maintainance money and an upgrade in software. . .

I have seen the "WP White Screen of Death" come up at least five times in one hour this morning when there
were as few as only 278 people in the forum only 72 members the rest were guest. And page loads were taking up to 10 minutes. I have seen WP respond much faster when there were over 600 people online with
at least 200 members logged in. Make of this what you will....

It may simply be due to the number of records in the database. I've developed numerous commercial databases (in Access and SQL Server but not MySQL) and when the number of records start to drift into the millions the database either needs a drastic archive and trim or the program code needed to deal with the database needs to be very well designed and streamlined or performance simply goes out of the window. The speed difference can be very significant e.g. a factor of ten times!

If WP is much slower now than it used to be with fewer users accessing it, then it implies to me that the number of records is the primary problem. Reducing the database to 10% of its current size could potentially make WP run like greased lightening.

I once wrote a SQL Server database holding 6 million records and it took a lot of fine code tweaking to optimise its performance. If you are only dealing with a few thousand records the code doesn't make that much difference to the overall performance.

It's such a pain, and happens more in Windows than Linux - but if you have patience, it usually works out for the best.
Since we expect computers to work so quickly, we get used to the speed - then they slow down, but we don't.
