I am wondering if prolonged and regular (at about the same time, with the same amount) consumption of tea has any long-term or at least regular from day-to-day effects on cognition.

I am aware that tea, in the short-term, improves cognition (because it contains theanine, which acts in conjunction with caffeine also present in the tea). But does the effect ware off/form a dependency in the long-run?

well any supposed 'alert' effect is very subtle, you wouldn't notice it wearing off.

it's probably habit forming, but so is sleeping.

I've never noticed any sort of concentration help with tea, but then again, I've been drinking the stuff since I was on the bottle. Might make a difference there. Also, I don't put sugar in it.

As far as increasing your concentration, I've personally found that a regular sized can of Full Throttle and a large beef jerky link is like manna from heaven. Made it through many a college course on that setup alone.

The truth is, you need to find what truly works for you, not what works for other people. Whatever it is about your body chemistry that is uniquely throwing off your ability to concentrate is what needs to be fixed, and it could be stress, could be sugar imbalances, could be to much or not enough caffeine... ect ect ect.

I also think it really depends on the tea. You make it sound as if all tea has the same things in it. Is there a specific tea you have in mind?

But yeah, I this should be in Health, Fitness, and Sports

Huh. Didn't notice. Maybe it's here for the science?

Mods, if you would, this one might need to mosey on over.

I think there plenty of studies regarding the effect of caffeine to the human body and mind - no wonder: caffeine is the most common drug worldwide. If I recall correctly there were no significant negative or positive effects, except the potential development of an caffeine addiction, with mild withdraw symptoms.

i take a couple theanine pills (100mg per capsule) in combination with caffeine (either energy drinks or coffee). Green tea has theanine in it so i don't feel the need to take more than one theanine capsule when I drink green tea.

I drink green tea every day. I had to make myself learn to drink it. I had some concern about the caffeine, but my understanding is the caffeine contains all of the things that make it so healthy. Here is a link to a governmental study in mice that support green tea as a dietary suppliment for mental disorders to help improve memory. It is kind of written in a way that is not reader friendly, but if you can wade through it, it does indicate green tea is good for cognitation.

I agree with Kip. You should do what is right for you and what works for you.

I think it contains fluoride but that doesn't stop me drinking it.

I researched further and found a really great article about theanine and caffeine in green tea. Apparently, theanine counteracts the affects of caffeine in green tea. It was interesting to note that theanine alone can be used to induce calmness AND it can be used as a stimulant depending upon the dosage. This article is really great to read and it includes the references to the research specfic to the information in the article. I could find no reference to long-term usage of theanine or green tea. Perhaps if you emailed the researchers listed at the end of this article, they would be able to direct you to clinical research which would be better able to help you.

Here is the link.

Contrary to popular belief, yes, it is okay to talk about something other than Linux in this forum.

But it has nothing to do with Computers, Math, or Technology. And it only vaguely relates to science in the same way that many threads in Health, Fitness, and Sports do.

The study of the effects of chemicals and drugs on human cognitive function sounds reasonably part of science to me; although the post may be ambiguously capable of being posted in several forums, I see nothing particularly wrong with it being here, particularly perhaps contingent on the quality of the intended discussion. Not that I want to step on the blue suede shoes of our moderators, I'm just saying that the location of such a post seems up to the discretion of the OP, and making a big deal out of it seems odd.

twoshots- doesn't actually have anything productive to add to this thread.
