A v chip on a tv allows you to block programs that a parent does not want their kids seeing or some adults do not want to see . See this link at the FCC website
http://www.fcc.gov/vchip/
the default setting is off you have to go into a tv menu and turn it on. And most have a lock code to stop it from being changed. Me personly have no use for this but i guess some parents use it .

I do not believe in censorship. I believe some things should not be seen by children, but I find the V-Chip to be a ridiculous invention. Kids will find out ways to disable it... and besides, parents are either too overprotective of what their kids see, or they just don't give a damn; and the maturity among kids varies, so what they can or cannot see varies. Just blocking any show rated too high is kind of stupid. How do you know the kid will see something they're too young for on a show that isn't blocked? Does the V-Chip think or have reasoning skills? No. We don't need a damn V-Chip. What we need are more responsible parents.

Well said. Stupid little devices like that don't substitue for responsible parenting. Parents these days always seem to be looking for easy answers and quick solutions to every problem. They need to wake up and realize that half-a**ed parenting will not cut it in the end, they need to get INVOLVED in their kid's lives, not for an hour a day, but for the WHOLE day.

Personally I find censorship to be a bad idea even in priciple, and I would prefer nothing be filtered for my own viewing. If ever I see something I'd rather not, I have the ability to close my eyes, and I wouldn't mind something being invented so I can close my ears ^_^. But I doubt i'd use it.

But as for this V chip concept, I am not immediately certain it is a bad idea. There are a whole host of lessons these concerned parents will be teaching their kids by using the V chip which i'm sure they'd rather not have their kids learn, but I know they wont believe reasonable people who tell explain to them why it is a bad idea. So i'm just interested to see what will come of V chip installments. If nothing we will learn more about people and societies.

Would I still need a V-chip if my digital cable box has parental blocks on it anyways?

I am not into that kind of thing. but sometimes I would use it JUST IN CASE!. If I am around youngsters I may let them watch some programs that may be a slight inappropriate. I wouldn't let them watch borderline content and especially, hard stuff alone

I do use a ordering block so that nobody, especially guests go and up my cable bill with useless orderings (and of course the Dirty channels).

They're going to find out how to block it or watch it anyway, so why bother? On a similar topic, I absolutely can't stand the V Smile and V Flash "educational" video game systems; they're just trying to rip-off Nintendo; what they need to do is blame the parents for letting their kids buy mature and/or adult rated video games! Nintendo makes games that are rated for everyone, so they shouldn't be ripped-off.
