I could never watch a complete episode of that cartoon because I thought it was stupid, boring, and forgettable. And when I saw the Nostalgia Critic's review of it recently on YT my negative feelings about it were confirmed. Captain Planet is a guy who is supposed to save the world from pollution, but he gets weakened by pollution? That's like "Hey Superman, will you get rid of this big ball of green Kryptonite for us?" Seriously, toss a banana peel at CP and he runs away screaming. And then there were the really awful "non-pollution" episodes like that kid with HIV and the bad guys are in his school spreading rumors and lies about him to the other students. You'd think the kids would be freaking out because there are what look like reject villains for the Ninja Turtles hiding in their lockers and stuff! Almost every movie, cartoon and video game about saving/protecting the environment made in the 90's was terrible and ironically added to the world's pollution. There's probably a pile of CP action figures in a landfill somewhere...

At least a banana peel's bio-degradable.

When I watched the show I never understood it. I think I was five or six or even four but I remember it being loud and very bright and colorful.

Upon reading and watching it I can say that it seemed to fight amongst itself. It wanted to be realistic but it had over the top cartoon villains added in with social and environmental problems, it wanted good role models but the characters had the personality of cardboard. It wanted to tell a good message but it always came out garbled in a mess of cliche storytelling. That and Wheeler had good points on many issues the planeteers faced but he was brushed off as a douche. That bugs me.

Part of me wants to reboot it in a gritty futuristic dystopia with strong cyber punk themes. That and CP wouldn't go down so easy when you chuck garbage at him like he was a hemophiliac at a bouncy castle.

The weirdest thing about Captain Planet was that the villains were insane strawmen. It's such a missed opportunity, since the villains are meant to represent the forces which pollute the world. They should have had interesting dialogue about how the modern world relies on people like them, and they should have dismissed the Planeteers as a bunch of naive idiots. Instead, they apparently just liked causing pollution for no particular reason, like it was a hobby.

Actually, that's why they did not have very many merchandise. There was some, but not much, really. I always wanted to start my own Captain Planet collection, and have a Captain Planet themed birthday party, but they did not sell like Captain Planet paper plates or napkins.

I just loved the bright colors and the music. But of course Captain Planet was not invincable. They did it like that because what they wanted was for the Planeteers to be heroes in their own right, not just characters for Captain Planet to rescue. They also sometimes also rescue him. No one's just going to show up and solve all the world's problems. Like the Planeteers, we must all work together. It was actually them who identified the problem and found a solution. It's more like Captain Planet was the one who carried it out what they couldn't, like collecting enough glass and creating a huge container to trap the garbage eaters in, and spin it to make them harmless. I also really liked that Captain Planet was bound to Earth. If he wondered too far from the planet, he would weaken, just like the Planeteers' rings. When Kwame and Ma-Ti were out in space, he couldn't return their powers because their rings were too far for him to reach. It's a concept I put into my own writing. If an Elemental wandered too far from Earth, he/she would weaken and die. A very terrible death, not only to die among humans, but so far away from Earth.

The villains were never meant to represent people, but concepts. I do agree, though, that the Planeteers were a bit naive in the sense that they believed that there was any good in humanity, and the hope that people would change their ways. I suppose they did like that so the show wouldn't come out misanthropic. In my own stories, calling someone 'human' is the worst insult they can receive.

I'm not sure how much the world depends on poaching animals for their skins, as decorations, or their horns. True, the modern world does depend on things such as electricity and fossil fuels, but there is cleaner technology, as well. The only problem is people refuse to use it. I've read some countries are actually carrying out fossil fuel phase outs, and nuclear phase outs. It's taking quite a long time, obviously, but they're working towards it.

A Captain Planet reboot could be cool, if it was done right. Not a movie; with all the more famous superheroes out there right now, CP would just be white noise. A decent reboot of the series. If it's anything less, it will get shot down in flames.

Captain Planet was quite possibly the worst cartoon show ever. It had a silly concept, a lame intro song, uninspiring heroes, and completely ridiculous villians. I remember it was on a lot, too. In one word: AWFUL!

Now that I mention it, James Bond, Jr. was probably the worst ever.
