Clive Owen was probably the most obvious choice to be the next Bond.
(And from what I've read, Owen had no interest in Bond anyway, so he probably wouldn't have brought much enthusiasm to the role.)
And back on topic, my favorite Bond film is
Licence to Kill. I love Dalton, and it was the first film to really portray Bond as Ian Fleming wrote him. It's actually a much better adaptation of the
Live and Let Die novel than the
Live and Let Die film was.
And from what I've read, not only was Clive Owen not interested in Bond, he also didn't like how women are portrayed in the Bond movies. One other reason the studio let go of Pierce Brosnan as Bond is because around the time
Casino Royale began pre-production, he was let go because he was asking for too much money to play Bond again.
Returning to topic, even though I've not seen all of the Bond movies, my favorite Bond movie has to be between
Dr. No,
Goldfinger, or
Casino Royale.
