What if Evangelion... in all its expressive psychology, is what people two thousand years in the future will worship as the 'ultimate word of reality'? What if it isn't adopted from current etymological origins, but the future will simply act like a mirror to the past and people would then create it, with a Bible full of robots, as they did in the past with just humans?

You know, religion does have that power. :P

We'd have an emo saviour, instead of one full of empathy (?)!

Besides the questions about the human mind and the trama this anime has very little footing for religion.

Why should a 2009 studio album by a blackened death metal band named "Behemoth" become a future religion?

But just to throw this out, I don't think Evangelion's aim is to tackle religion. It only incorporated religious concepts to make the show look cool and interesting. Though the intensive and constant amount of religious references Anno puts in the anime really makes you think if he is indirectly lecturing us about religion.
