http://www.amazon.com/Berserk-TV-Season-Complete-Collection/dp/B0003JAK6C/ref=pd_bbs_sr_2/002-8621792-7084858?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1176008699&sr=1-2
Berserk is the single best Anime (and Manga) EVER. The price on this is a little scary though... But I'm sure you can bitorrent it.

Being a Fan of Off-Air anime myself...lemme offer some..

Slayers(Already mentioned. Very Funny. ^^)

Hellsing.(also already mentioned)

Dragon Half.(Very short, couple episodes. but it is HILARIOUS. though there is some "flashing" at the end, just to warn you.)

Tenshi Ni Narumon!/ I'm gonna be an angel! :This is SOOO cute. though there are only 3 DVDs out so far,but Last time I checked the whole subtitled version was on youtube...

Fushigi Yugi: Alot of people like this anime, And I need to get the rest of it. ><

Earthian: a short shounen-ai. quite interesting.Though it may offend some religious people.

Some people also recommend, but I haven't seen myself yet:
Fruits Basket
Gravitation
Ranma 1/2

a good place to order anime is Discountanimedvd.com. they usually have sales going on. also you can buy manga from there! (Graphic novel)

I'd recommend Neon Genesis Evangelion as well. Although I'd have to disagree that the show is slow, I always found the pacing to be far better than in many other series, save for the occasional recap episode.

For feature length stuff, I'd say go for Studio Ghibli works like Grave of the Fireflies and Princess Mononoke.

I'd recommend Fruits Basket. One of the main characters, Kyo, has almost Aspie-like problems with socializing, and the story teaches a lot about how to think of other people and be kind to them, as well as how to like yourself and see your good qualities. I've made it sound like an after school special but it's got great humor and also gets quite dark at times.

I would recomend the following:

Bleach - it has the right combination of humour, action and great characters
Berserk -Probably my all time favourite anime...might be too graphic for sensitive viewers
Last exile - Great story and cool ships
Samurai 7 - good story line with cool action scenes
Macross Zero - awesome series...although it is a bit short (just five episodes)
Hellsing - I liked the ending...I still get goose bumps just thinking about it

My own recommendations, with an attempt to explain why I liked them.

Vision of Escaflowne: Fantasy, with mecha. A young girl from modern Japan is transported to a fantasy world, with magic, beastmen, superscience and giant robots powered by the hearts of dragons. She gets caught up in a war between nations and in romantic intrigue, as her own precognitive powers prove the key to what's happening.

Not the most original premise in the world, but the plot is handled exceptionally well. It avoids the cliches, and has some really surprising plot twists that make perfect sense. A word of warning, though--the English dub is awful, the original voices with subtitles is much better.

Noir: Contemporary, crime, conspiracy. Two female assassins (one a professional killer, the other an amnesiac girl who knows how to deal death, but not where the knowledge comes from) make an uneasy alliance to try and unravel the secrets in both their pasts. However, this search leads them into a murky conspiracy, where it turns out that their histories and meeting may not be as chance as they seemed.

Very good, atmospheric, and refreshingly understated, with the action largely staying in the realms of the plausible and crumbs being dropped at the right pace to retain interest in the big plot.

Excel Saga: You really need to have seen some other anime shows to get the most out of this, as it takes the form of a satire of the cliches of other anime genres. The plot concerns ACROSS, a secret society that wants to take over the world for nebulous reasons, and the titular Excel, it's incompetent operative. That's really just a framing device for bizarre paraodies of everything from war dramas to mecha to martial arts to sports to the Power Rangers. The first episode isn't very good, but after that it's almost solid gold.

On the others, both Hellsing and Berserk were adapted from long-running manga series, and have different endings. Hellsing's ending wasn't very satisfactory for me, but there's a newer series in the pipeline that's more faithful to the manga (with the Nazi vampires and katana-wielding warrior nuns). Berserk the anime has an almost completely different focus to the manga, so the ending comes out of left field for a lot of people, from what I've seen.

(edit--remembered one)

Azumanga Daioh is a new favourite. It follows a motley group of friends (and their teachers) through high school. It's kind of hard to sum up why it's so good in a summary, but it is a great mixture of funny and poignant, with great characterisation and some moments of brilliant, surreal comedy. As an aside, I've often heard the character of Osaka cited as an example of someone with AS, and I can see some traits in common there.

www.thespectrum.net is a good source of Manga, if you're desparate. The translations can be a bit dire, though.

Three simple words:
Ginga Densetsu Weed
Awesome anime about wild dogs who can talk. Very intense and dramatic. Has some gore and death scenes, though.

I really adore Inuyasha.. I even think Inuyasha has AS.
Rumiko Takahashi, the creator of Inuyasha, has refreshing view on
feudal Japan and a very warm embrace of cast. I am appreciative to finally
have been a spectator to a woman's view in the cartoon world (there aren't many
this side of the planet).

Also, i highly recommend Hayao Miyazaki's Spirited Away, Howl's Moving
Castle, and Princess Mononoke
. Hayao vicariously lives through his art.
He incorporates his childhood with themes of earthenly awareness and
Shinto mysticism.

These are jewels. Seriously.
