With my sister's birthday coming up in a few days, what are silent movies that you would recommend? My sister has Metropolis on her wish list, but what are silent movies that are easy on find on DVD? We don't own a BLU-RAY player and we can't afford online streaming services, so that's why I'm asking.

I've seen a bunch of silent movies recently. I don't know about being able to find them on DVD, but I would recommend:

The Battleship Potemkin
The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari
City Lights
Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde
Faust
The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse
Intolerance
The Lost World
The Mark of Zorro
Metropolis
Modern Times
Nosferatu
The Phantom of the Opera
Robin Hood
Safety Last!
Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans
The Thief of Bagdad

"The General" by Buster Keaton, it's considered his masterpiece.

Thanks folks, but let me be clear on a few points:

-My sister will refuse to watch Birth Of A Nation because of its racist themes and she will refuse to watch Intolerance because of its racist undertones.

-She has never watched any silent movies that starred Buster Keaton or Charlie Chaplin.

-She liked watching The Artist, but she's not sure if she wants a copy of The Artist as an alternate to Metropolis.

Question: Which version of Metropolis do you think is better? The "cut version" or the "extended version" known as The Complete Metropolis?

Oh, yeah, I forget to add The Artist because it is a recent movie.

How about Harold Lloyd? He, Buster Keaton, and Charlie Chaplin are the big three of silent comedy.

I haven't seen it yet, but I've read that the extended version of Metropolis makes it easier to understand. Back when we used to see it in film class at Uni, we all agreed it had a wacky plot. But the extra bits fill in those parts.
