Okay, okay. I get pretty much all of these entries, but what I didn't get was your explanations. Mean? Arrogant? Abusive? I don't mean to sound confronting and/or offensive in this reply, but I just want to spread my opinion on this a bit, and I'll try to be as adapting as possible. c:
For example, there's a bully in a fairly funny show. He kicks all the other kids, calls them names, etc. Some people might go, ugh, he's such a terrible character. He shouldn't even be on the show. First of all, he's most likely one of the antagonists. They make the show interesting and give it conflict. Second of all, maybe you got to see a little bit into his home life. His father calls him out with the exact same things he calls you and your friends. His mother hit him in places where his clothes will cover.
You might call another character arrogant, selfish, stupidly centered around their own self-being. Well. More often than not - they don't even know they're doing it. I used to be like this until someone came around and recorded me bragging about my art, and guess what? I didn't know that I was doing it. I started to fix myself of this issue - to catch myself before I rant. Now, today, I know precisely when I have a rant starting and/or bragging profusely.
Sometimes the media creator doesn't even know better to make a character bland as bread, y'know? Sometimes they don't have backstory for a character's mean behaviour, or selfish money spending, or just negative traits in general, but you know what? TV Shows are meant to be enjoyed, and for enjoyment, it needs plot. And what makes plot interesting? Conflict! More often than not, conflict is compromised of man vs. man, and this most likely includes an antagonist.
So, this is my (really hypocritical) rant on what I'm looking for in here. I wasn't expecting such loose and bland answers, and I've said myself in here that I really try hard not to rant, but I personally think that people would think harder on this type of stuff. I just want you guys to take into account everything before you bash it. And maybe just give it a chance.
If you don't have anything nice to say, well. You know how it goes...
