The Hobbit: Battle Of The Five Armies.

Didn't live up to The Lord Of The Rings trilogy, but pretty exciting, with lots of cool violence! Thankfully, they had added Ian Holm as the elderly Bilbo Bagins.

Nitpick: according to the books, Bilbo hasn't aged between his adventure in The Hobbit and his farewell party at the start of LotR. So at his 111th birthday he should have looked like he did in The Hobbit (I know this is impractical for the film, but it always bothered me a bit).

I confess I had never read The Hobbit, while I haven't read The Lord Of The Rings trilogy since my college days, so there's a lot I simply don't remember.

Then you might be surprised the by The Hobbit (book), as style and tone is very different from LotR. It is a short book, and to turn it into three films they have added a lot from the appendixes of LotR, especially most of the stuff about the Dwarves vs Orcs. They couldn't use Silmarillion as they don't have the rights to that one but they do have rights to LotR. That's also why they were able to add in Legolas when he isn't mentioned in The Hobbit (although we know he was alive back then since he's an old dude).

While I hadn't read that book, I knew pretty well that they had added a ton of stuff, with characters who weren't supposed to be there, in order to stretch the book into a trilogy. I think they could have made one movie about Bilbo Baggins while keeping to the source material, and they would have been fine.

But three movies means moar money.
I read the books so many times I lost count and they helped me learn English, so I'm book > films. :D

I'm watching a Studiocanal animated film with my niece called "Thunder & the House of Magic" -- and it's turning into one of my favorite.

After the kids left, I checked out James Cameron's Deepsea Challenge and thought it was amazing.
