Robert De Niro,Joe Pesci and directed my Martin Scorsese

A long one at over 3 hours but quite worth it.

What a film! Magnificent performances from so many at the top of their game. Scorcese did a brilliant job here. Sadly, because of chicanery, he was robbed - ten Oscar awards, no-one awarded anything. No other film with so many nominations has ever been so badly treated. Al Pacino was robbed once before, for Godfather 2. I have seen this film four times, marvelling at the clever interweaving of so much detail and each time I notice something I missed before.

It may be more interesting to me as I lived through the era of all these events, and even met some of the Chicago mafia in New Zealand - believe it or not!! And I believe the film's assertion that mob bosses like Carlos Marcello from New Orleans arranged to have JFK assassinated, as the film also asserts.

A masterpiece.

While I have not seen The Irishman, I understand Joe Pesci, ironically, makes a reference to one David Ferrie, a real life CIA contract employee and accused New Orleans mob associate, who Pesci had played in the movie, JFK.

Pesci's performance is a masterpiece of acting. An actor at the very top of his game. It outshines anything he has done before. I was astounded by the nuances he captured and conveyed.

I had a mixed (though still positive!) reaction to Irishman.

Goodfellas and Casino, violent as they were, seemed animated and alive. Everything in Irishman seems tinged with death, it is a weary film. Goodfellas mobsters go out in a blaze of glory; Irishmen fade away, as Pesci does in those amazing prison sequences.

Pesci as Buffalino was brilliant, but I thought the center of the film was Pacino's magnificent motormouth Jimmy Hoffa.

It was Pacino's best performance in any of his films in the last 20 years.
