I get bashed all the time in real life, so it's hard for me to say anything offensive.

I'm the same way about movies and TV shows - if I like a movie it actually takes me around 8 hours to watch a 2 hour movie to my complete satisfaction - rewinding it and watching and taking in all the details . . . most people won't watch movies with me . . . I do the same thing with TV shows and documentaries I really want to see . . .
TiVo is a wonderful thing - now I can even watch live TV over and over and over and over and over again!

Whooo boy here we go...

On the Burton Collective, this same arguement came up and it just swerved out of control.

First off, they made it very clear that Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was absolutely not a remake of the film, hence the differences in the titles.

Secondly, Willy Wonka is not meant to be similar to Michael Jackson! Wonka hates kids! And I'm sure some Johnny Depp fans out there know this already, but Depp stated in countless interviews that his portrayal of Willy Wonka was based on old kid's TV show hosts.

I'm not attacking anyone in any way, but since this topic is up, I might as well state my thoughts...

I would take watching the 1971 movie on DVD any day, but haven't gotten around to renting it yet.

I saw the new movie last week and have had the Wilder version on DVD for some time. They are different approaches on the same source material. Burton's auteurial natures shines through. I have to admit, going to the cinema, I was unsure what to expect.

Hopefully, you've all seen this film, that's why you've commenting on it. So for me, the stand out moment in the film was the cheesy dolls and what happens to them.

It's been seven days since I saw the film and whenever I think about it, a smile creeps across my face. Pure Burton.

Yay! The DVD's out!

I got the 2-disc edition for my b-day! :D There are these two features I especially like; one about how they train the squirrels and the other about how they used camera tricks and computers to multiply Deep Roy into thousands of Oompa Loompas!

Saw the new one a few days ago. The humor all seems forced, and I didn't laugh once. And I can't stand the way Willy Wonka was portrayed.

I was never a big fan of the Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory movie mostly because it was not more than an extended commercial for a failed candy bar. Even though he wrote the screenplay, Roald Dahl (who's granddaughter, Sophie, is HOT, btw) hated the film. In cases like this, where the author does not like the screenplay because it was not in keeping with the story, I side with the author because it was his story and not the story of the director.

Dahl's major complaint was that the 1971 film concentrated too much on Willy Wonka and not enough on Charlie Bucket. Burton's film was supposed to fix this problem, but from what I've heard he failed in that, too. The problem that I see is that Willy Wonka is just too large a character, and it is difficult in film or any other form of drama to overcome a character like that. (Look up the origin of the phrase "Don't out-Herod Herod") In text, it is easier to have an overshadowing figure who still remains a shadow.

I agree with you there. The backstory was absolutely unnecessary for a mysterious character like Willy Wonka because, you see, he needs no backstory. He's just Willy Wonka, this crazy guy who owns a factory (Depp did do a pretty good job in that regard though).

Overall I'd give credit to Depp for doing his best as Wonka, and not to Burton for fooling around with the plot so much.....

I personally loved the 2005 film because it was closer to the book than the 1971 one. The 1971 film had WAY too many changes from the book for my taste. That, and the 1971 oompa-loompa freaked me out as a kid.

By the way, am I the only one who saw AS traits in the 2005 Wonka?

...

Oops. I hadn't read through the whole thread so I didn't see that there was, in fact, someone who thought that exact same thing.

I'm also thinking of writing a fan fiction story where Wonka gets diagnosed with AS. The suspicion starts when Charlie was assigned to do a research paper on the subject and sees that Wonka has a lot of the traits. He then leaves the paper out on purpose and Wonka finds it and reads it. Right after Wonka gets through the diagnostic tests (which he hates because it means being outside the factory talking to strangers for hours and hours) he comes into the Bucket house, closes the door, and slumps against it, saying "Ugh! at least that's over with!"
